Why can't some of these pages give a simple list of differences?
Because for nested pairs a difference list would be false. When one name sits inside the other, the species is not an alternative to the group — it is an example of it, and it possesses the group's traits by definition. Presenting them as contrasting options would teach the reader something incorrect. These pages instead explain the containment, then describe what distinguishes that particular member from other members of the same group, which is the question the reader usually meant to ask.
How current is the classification used here?
It reflects the arrangement in widely used reference databases at the time of the last review, and each page carries that review date. Taxonomy is revised continuously, particularly in groups where molecular data is still accumulating, so a placement stated here may be superseded. Where a group is known to be contested or recently rearranged, the page flags it rather than presenting a single answer with more confidence than the evidence supports.
Do common names ever map cleanly onto scientific groups?
Sometimes, but far less often than people expect.
