Telling them apart
Look at the outline first. A resting hawk-moth forms a sharp triangle, with long narrow forewings swept back over a thick tapering body. Most other moths look broader, softer or more rounded in outline, and many hold their wings flat, tent-like or wrapped. In flight the difference is even clearer, because a sphingid moves fast and directly and can hold station at a flower, while a typical moth flutters. If the insect has a stout torpedo body, long pointed forewings held swept back, and it hovers at a flower without landing, it is a hawk-moth, and therefore also a moth. If it is a broad-winged, fluttery, softer-looking insect at a lit window, it is a moth from one of the many other families. A large smooth caterpillar with a curved horn at the tail end is a sphingid; hairy, looping or case-building caterpillars are not.
Habitat and distribution
Moths occur in almost every terrestrial habitat, including deserts, tundra edges, caves and stored food, with larvae feeding on leaves, wood, roots, fungi, lichen, detritus and even keratin in a few families. Hawk-moths are strongest in warm regions, with the greatest diversity in the tropics, but temperate faunas hold plenty of species and several are long-distance migrants that arrive far outside their breeding range in warm summers. Both groups are well represented in gardens with nectar-rich flowers.
Diet and ecological role
Adult moths span the full range from species that never feed to species that take nectar, sap, fruit juice or fluids from damp ground. Hawk-moths sit firmly at the nectar-feeding end, and many are important pollinators of pale, heavily scented, deep-tubed flowers that open at dusk. Their larvae are mostly leaf feeders, and several hawk-moth hornworms are familiar on garden and crop plants in the nightshade, willowherb and vine families.
Behaviour
Most moths are nocturnal and navigate using celestial and horizon cues, which is the leading explanation for why artificial light disorients them. Hawk-moths add a distinctive foraging style: they approach a flower, hold a hovering position on rapidly beating narrow wings, extend a long proboscis and feed without landing, then move on quickly. Several species undertake seasonal movements over hundreds of kilometres, behaviour that is rare among moth families of comparable size.
Senses and adaptations
Moths generally rely on feathery or filamentous antennae carrying large numbers of receptors tuned to female pheromones, and many families evolved ultrasound-sensitive ears in response to bat echolocation. Hawk-moths bring a specialised set of flight adaptations: high wing-loading, powerful thoracic muscles capable of pre-flight warm-up by shivering, and excellent low-light vision that allows some species to discriminate flower colour by starlight.
