Bee vs Hoverfly: Key Differences Explained
The short answer
A hoverfly is a fly wearing a bee's warning colours. Flies have one pair of wings where bees have two, and hoverflies have very large eyes covering most of the head and short stubby antennae, whereas bees have smaller eyes and longer elbowed antennae. Hoverflies cannot sting at all. Their precise stationary hovering, holding position in mid-air before darting sideways, is characteristic.

How they are related
Hoverflies belong to the family Syrphidae within Diptera, the true flies, while bees are hymenopterans. The two orders diverged very long ago, and the resemblance is entirely superficial — an example of Batesian mimicry, in which a harmless species gains protection by resembling a defended one.

Count the wings if you can: two for a hoverfly, four for a bee. If that is not visible, use the head. A hoverfly's eyes are enormous, covering most of the head, and its antennae are short stubs, whereas a bee has a clearly defined face and long elbowed antennae. Hovering flight seals it.

Both are found wherever flowering plants grow — gardens, meadows, hedgerows, woodland edge and farmland. Hoverflies are among the most numerous flower visitors in many temperate systems, and some species migrate in very large numbers, a phenomenon that has only been properly quantified in recent decades.
Diet and ecological role
Adult hoverflies feed on nectar and pollen, making them genuine pollinators, and their larvae vary greatly: many are voracious aphid predators, others feed on decaying plant material, dung or the nests of social insects. Adult bees also take nectar and pollen but additionally collect pollen deliberately to provision their young, which hoverflies do not do.
Behaviour
The hovering that gives the family its name is precise station-keeping in mid-air, often in a shaft of sunlight, followed by rapid sideways darts. Bees move more directly between flowers and work them methodically. Hoverflies are also more inclined to land on skin and clothing, which reinforces the impression that they might sting.
Senses and adaptations
The hoverfly's very large compound eyes give exceptional motion detection and a wide field of view, supporting the precise mid-air station-keeping that defines the family. The reduced hind wings, called halteres, act as vibrating gyroscopes that feed rotational information to the flight system — an arrangement unique to flies and central to their manoeuvrability.
