Why do so many harmless insects look like stinging ones?
Because resembling a defended animal is an effective defence in itself. Predators that have learned to avoid a stinging insect also avoid anything that looks sufficiently like one, so mimics gain protection without investing in a sting. Hoverflies mimicking bees and wasps are the textbook example, and they can be told apart by wing count, eye size, antenna length and flight behaviour — hovering flight being one of the more accessible cues.
Are insects and spiders the same kind of animal?
No. Both are arthropods, but insects and arachnids are separate classes that diverged very early. Insects have six legs, bodies in three sections and usually antennae and wings. Spiders have eight legs, bodies in two sections, no antennae and no wings. The difference is easily as significant as the one between a bird and a mammal, and calling both 'bugs' obscures it entirely.
