Leafcutter ants sit within the tribe Attini, the fungus-growing ants, and specifically in the genera Atta and Acromyrmex, which practise the most derived form of that agriculture. Fungus growing arose once in the ancestors of the attines, so every leafcutter is an ant, but the reverse relationship does not hold anywhere outside the Americas.

A note on naming: Leafcutter ant is a behavioural label covering species in Atta and Acromyrmex; other attine ants farm fungus without cutting fresh leaves, so fungus growing and leaf cutting are not the same trait.

The behaviour identifies them before the anatomy does: a trail of ants each carrying a leaf fragment above the body is unmistakable and is limited to the Americas. Up close, Atta and Acromyrmex are reddish to brown with a spiny thorax, and Acromyrmex carries more thoracic spines than Atta.
