Telling them apart

A bumblebee reads as bulky and furry, with a rounded body, dense pile and broad colour bands, and it usually sounds lower and heavier in flight than a honey bee. All bees provision their young on pollen and nectar, and it is this floral diet that separates them from the predatory wasps they descend from. Some bees are strict specialists tied to one plant genus and fly only when that plant flowers, while bumblebees are broad generalists visiting many families. Behaviour

A bumblebee colony begins with a single overwintered queen who founds a nest alone, rears the first workers herself, then shifts to egg laying. Late in the season the colony produces new queens and males, and the old colony, including the founding queen, dies. Honey bee colonies instead persist through winter on stored honey and reproduce by swarming. Most other bees never form colonies at all and simply seal a provisioned cell and leave.

Senses and adaptations

Bees see into the ultraviolet and are red-blind in the human sense, so flowers advertise with ultraviolet nectar guides invisible to us. Bumblebees additionally detect the weak electric fields around flowers, which published experiments link to their ability to learn which blooms have recently been visited. Their thermoregulatory shivering is the other standout adaptation, allowing foraging at air temperatures where most other bees remain grounded.

A bumblebee worker typically lives a few weeks in summer, while a new queen may live close to a year, spending much of it in hibernation before founding a colony in spring. Honey bee workers live weeks in the active season and months as winter bees, and a honey bee queen can live for several years.
