Newts are one group within the salamanders, so the names are nested rather than opposed. How they are related
Salamander is the everyday name for Caudata, the order of tailed amphibians, which includes several hundred species across a number of families. Newts form a subfamily inside the family Salamandridae. The relationship is one of containment, so a newt is always a salamander and the two words are not alternatives. Some languages do not make the distinction at all.
A note on naming: Newt names a subfamily, not a rank equivalent to salamander. Which species are called newts varies somewhat between regions and languages.
Telling them apart
Look at where the animal is and what its skin is like. A rough, granular-skinned tailed amphibian in or beside a pond, particularly with a crested male present in spring, is a newt. Habitat and distribution
Newts spend substantial parts of the year in ponds and slow water and return to breed annually, with several species alternating between an aquatic breeding phase and a terrestrial phase. Other salamanders include fully aquatic species, fully terrestrial species that never enter water even to breed, and cave-dwelling specialists. The order as a whole is centred on the northern hemisphere.
Diet and ecological role
Both are carnivorous, taking invertebrates such as worms, insect larvae, small crustaceans and molluscs, with aquatic phases feeding on aquatic invertebrates and terrestrial phases on soil and litter fauna. Larger species take correspondingly larger prey, including small vertebrates. None is herbivorous at any adult stage.
Behaviour
Newts have well-developed courtship, with males of many species displaying to females using tail fanning to direct pheromones. Many salamanders have elaborate courtship as well, and in most the male deposits a spermatophore that the female takes up rather than mating directly. Both are largely nocturnal on land and both rely on moisture, retreating under cover during dry conditions.
Senses and adaptations
Several newts possess potent skin toxins, and in some populations the toxin level is exceptionally high, part of a long-running evolutionary arms race with predators that have developed resistance. Both newts and other salamanders show remarkable regenerative ability, regrowing limbs, tail and some internal tissue, which is why they are studied intensively in regeneration research.
