How they are related

Both are lizards but belong to different families — geckos to the infraorder Gekkota and skinks to Scincidae, which is one of the largest lizard families with well over a thousand species. They are not particularly close relatives within Squamata, and the differences between them are family-level rather than superficial.

Skin texture is the fastest cue: granular and soft points to a gecko, smooth and glossy with overlapping scales points to a skink. Then check the eyes and toes. A lidless eye or expanded toe pads confirm a gecko; movable eyelids and simple clawed toes on a low-slung body confirm a skink.

Geckos are strongly associated with vertical surfaces, including rock faces, tree trunks and the walls of buildings, and several species have spread worldwide alongside human settlement. Skinks are chiefly ground-dwellers in leaf litter, grassland, sand and rock crevices, though some are arboreal. Both are most diverse in warm regions.

Diet and ecological role

Both are predominantly insectivorous, taking whatever invertebrates their size allows. House-associated geckos concentrate around lights at night where insects gather, which is why they are so often seen on walls near lamps. Some larger skinks are omnivorous and take fruit and flowers as well as invertebrates.

Behaviour

Most geckos are nocturnal and vocal, using chirps and clicks in territorial and mating contexts — unusual among lizards, which are generally silent.
