Snake vs Legless Lizard: Key Differences Explained
The short answer
Legless lizards are lizards that lost their limbs independently of snakes, and three features give them away: movable eyelids, visible external ear openings, and a long tail that can be shed and regrown. How they are related
Both are squamates, and snakes themselves evolved from lizard ancestors, so the relationship is real. But legless lizards are not snakes: limb loss has occurred independently many times across several lizard families, including the anguids and pygopodids. This is convergent evolution driven by burrowing and grass-dwelling lifestyles rather than shared descent from a limbless ancestor.
