How they are related
Gymnophiona is the third and least known order of living amphibians, alongside frogs and salamanders, with roughly two hundred described species and new ones still being named. Snakes are squamate reptiles, sharing ancestry with lizards, and number in the thousands of species. The two groups are separated by hundreds of millions of years, and their similar shape is a textbook case of convergence on a burrowing body plan.
A note on naming: Caecilian covers the whole order Gymnophiona, with roughly two hundred described species and new ones still being described, and snake covers the suborder Serpentes with thousands of species, so both names describe large groups rather than single animals.
Telling them apart
Look for rings. A body divided along its length by evenly spaced encircling grooves belongs to a caecilian, and no snake shows that. Then check the head: a caecilian has a blunt, compact skull with a tiny or hidden eye and a small tentacle in a groove near the snout, while a snake has an obvious eye covered by a clear cap and a forked tongue it flicks in and out constantly.

Habitat and distribution
Caecilians live in wet tropical soil, leaf litter, riverbanks and, in the aquatic species, in slow rivers and swamps of South America. They need moisture because their skin is permeable, so they are absent from dry regions and from temperate ones. Snakes occupy deserts, forest, grassland, mountains, fresh water and the sea, and reach much colder latitudes, so the habitat range of the two groups barely compares.
Diet and ecological role
Caecilians are predators of soil animals, especially earthworms and termites, plus other invertebrates and occasionally small vertebrates, hunting largely by chemical cues in the dark. Snakes eat a far wider range of prey, from insects and eggs to fish, amphibians, birds and mammals, and swallow it whole. Both are carnivores, but a caecilian's world is a few centimetres of damp soil while a snake's may be an entire landscape.
Behaviour
Most caecilians are secretive burrowers that push through soil using a strongly reinforced skull and a distinctive two-part jaw-closing muscle arrangement. Reproduction is varied: some lay eggs, others give birth to live young, and in several species the young feed on a specially produced outer layer of the mother's skin, a behaviour documented in more than one lineage. Snakes show no comparable parental feeding.
Senses and adaptations
The caecilian tentacle is a modified structure that carries chemical information to the vomeronasal organ, effectively giving a burrowing animal a chemical sense that works without opening the mouth. Vision is minimal because it is of little use underground. Snakes retain useful vision, add a highly developed vomeronasal system served by the forked tongue, and detect ground vibration through the jaw, with some lineages adding infrared-sensing pits.

Caecilian lifespans are poorly documented because so few species have been studied in captivity or marked in the field, though some individuals have been maintained for over a decade. Snake lifespans vary enormously with body size and climate, from a few years in small species to several decades in large captive constrictors.
