How they are related

Both belong to Colubridae in the broad sense, but to different lineages within it. Thamnophis is a large North American genus with dozens of recognised species and many named subspecies, and garter snake is applied loosely across all of them. Grass snake once referred to a single wide-ranging species, but genetic work has split the group, so the barred grass snake of Britain and western Europe is now generally treated separately from the eastern form.

A note on naming: Garter snake covers dozens of Thamnophis species with very different patterns, and grass snake now covers several Natrix species after recent genetic splits, so both names describe groups rather than single animals.

Telling them apart

Look first at the neck. A pale crescent bordered in black behind the head marks a grass snake; garter snakes have no collar. Then look along the body: three pale stripes running head to tail indicate a garter snake, while short dark bars down the flanks of an otherwise plain olive body indicate a Natrix. Both have keeled scales and a round pupil, so neither of those features helps.

Habitat and distribution

Garter snakes occupy an enormous range of habitats, from mountain meadows and prairie to woodland edge, marsh and suburban gardens, and some species are among the most northerly-ranging snakes in the Americas. Grass snakes concentrate around still and slow fresh water, wet meadow, hedgerow and gardens with compost heaps, and use warm decaying vegetation for egg-laying, which is why they turn up so often in allotments.

Diet and ecological role

Amphibians dominate both diets. Grass snakes take frogs, toads and newts, along with fish, and swallow prey whole without constriction. Garter snakes are broader generalists, adding earthworms, slugs, leeches, small fish, tadpoles and occasionally nestling rodents depending on species and region. Some garter snake populations are notable for tolerating toxic newts, an interaction that has been studied extensively as a case of predator and prey escalating together.

Behaviour

Both are active by day and both bask to raise body temperature before hunting. Grass snakes overwinter more singly in banks, root systems and compost, and are best known for the elaborate death-feigning display in which the snake rolls over and lies limp with its mouth open.

Both hunt largely by scent, flicking the forked tongue to deliver chemical traces to the vomeronasal organ, which is why either can track a frog through dense vegetation. Grass snakes swim with the head raised and can remain submerged for extended periods while foraging. Wild garter snakes face heavy predation, particularly as juveniles, and typical wild survival is only a few years, though captive individuals have lived well into their teens. Can garter snakes and grass snakes be found in the same place?
Not naturally. Thamnophis is a New World genus and Natrix is an Old World one, so a wild snake in Britain or mainland Europe is not a garter snake, and a wild snake in Ohio or Ontario is not a grass snake. The confusion is mostly a naming problem, worsened because British readers sometimes use garter snake loosely for any striped snake they see online.
Does the yellow collar behind the head mean it is a grass snake?
In Europe, usually yes. A cream, yellow or orange crescent bordered with black immediately behind the head is the classic grass snake mark, and no Thamnophis shows it. The caution is that the collar dulls with age in some individuals and is reduced in certain southern populations, so a faded animal should be checked against the flank barring and the plain, unstriped back as well.
Do grass snakes really play dead, and do garter snakes do it too?
Grass snakes are well known for it. A cornered animal may hiss, then roll onto its back and lie limp with the mouth open and the tongue hanging out, sometimes releasing musk at the same time. Garter snakes rely more on musk, body flattening and rapid escape, and convincing death-feigning is not part of their usual repertoire, so the display is a strong pointer to Natrix.
Why do garter snakes give birth while grass snakes lay eggs?
The two genera evolved different reproductive strategies. Live birth in Thamnophis lets females carry developing young while basking, which helps in cool northern climates where eggs left in the ground might not develop reliably. Natrix relies instead on external heat sources, seeking out rotting vegetation whose decomposition warms the clutch. Compost heaps in gardens have become a well-documented substitute for natural leaf and reed piles.
Are either of these snakes dangerous to people?
Neither is regarded as dangerous to humans. Grass snakes are non-venomous and rely on bluff and escape.
