The short answer

Rattlesnakes are vipers, and the two names simply sit at different ranks. Viper refers to the family Viperidae, a near-worldwide group of hinge-fanged snakes. Rattlesnake refers to the American genera Crotalus and Sistrurus, which sit inside the pit viper subfamily of that same family and carry a segmented keratin rattle no Old World viper has. So every rattlesnake is a viper, while a European adder or a puff adder is a viper that is not a rattlesnake.

Telling them apart

From a safe distance the rattle is decisive: a blunt tail ending in dry, stacked segments belongs to a rattlesnake, and nothing else in Viperidae carries one. Beyond that, both labels share a broadly triangular head, keeled scales and a thickset body, which is why head shape is a poor diagnostic. Many harmless snakes also vibrate their tails in dry leaves, producing a buzzing sound that is easily mistaken for a rattle.

If the tail ends in a rattle and the animal is in the Americas, it is a rattlesnake, and therefore also a viper. If the snake is a heavy-bodied, hinge-fanged species in Europe, Africa or Asia, it is a viper but cannot be a rattlesnake. Asking whether something is a rattlesnake or a viper is like asking whether an animal is a terrier or a dog.

Habitat and distribution

Rattlesnakes occupy deserts, grassland, rocky slopes, pine woodland and coastal scrub across the Americas, with several species using communal winter dens in colder parts of the range. The wider family spans African savanna and forest, European moorland and mountainside, Middle Eastern desert, and tropical Asian forest, so viper habitat as a category covers almost every terrestrial biome outside Australia and the far north.

Diet and ecological role

Both labels cover ambush predators that take mainly small mammals, with lizards, birds, amphibians and other snakes appearing in many diets and dominating in some smaller species. Juveniles often specialise on smaller prey than adults of the same species.
