Viperidae is a family of front-fanged snakes usually split into true vipers, the pit vipers, and a small number of outlying lineages. Rattlesnakes are not a family-level group at all: they are the genera Crotalus and Sistrurus, both firmly inside the pit viper subfamily. Species counts in both genera have shifted repeatedly as genetic work has split and merged populations, so any total quoted for rattlesnakes should be read as provisional rather than fixed.

Telling them apart
From a safe distance the rattle is decisive: a blunt tail ending in dry, stacked segments belongs to a rattlesnake, and nothing else in Viperidae carries one. Beyond that, both labels share a broadly triangular head, keeled scales and a thickset body, which is why head shape is a poor diagnostic. Many harmless snakes also vibrate their tails in dry leaves, producing a buzzing sound that is easily mistaken for a rattle.
If the tail ends in a rattle and the animal is in the Americas, it is a rattlesnake, and therefore also a viper. If the snake is a heavy-bodied, hinge-fanged species in Europe, Africa or Asia, it is a viper but cannot be a rattlesnake. Asking whether something is a rattlesnake or a viper is like asking whether an animal is a terrier or a dog.
Habitat and distribution
Rattlesnakes occupy deserts, grassland, rocky slopes, pine woodland and coastal scrub across the Americas, with several species using communal winter dens in colder parts of the range. The wider family spans African savanna and forest, European moorland and mountainside, Middle Eastern desert, and tropical Asian forest, so viper habitat as a category covers almost every terrestrial biome outside Australia and the far north.
Diet and ecological role
Both labels cover ambush predators that take mainly small mammals, with lizards, birds, amphibians and other snakes appearing in many diets and dominating in some smaller species. Juveniles often specialise on smaller prey than adults of the same species. Pit vipers, rattlesnakes included, can use their facial pits to detect warm-bodied prey, which supports hunting after dark in a way most true vipers manage by other senses.
Behaviour
Rattling is a warning display, not an attack signal: the animal is advertising its presence so that a large intruder moves away. Many rattlesnakes are relatively sedentary ambush hunters that spend long periods coiled at a chosen site. Across the family, vipers show the same broad pattern of waiting rather than pursuing, and several species display parental attendance at the young for a short period after birth.
Senses and adaptations
The loreal pits of rattlesnakes and other pit vipers contain a membrane densely supplied with heat-sensitive nerve endings, giving a crude thermal image of the surroundings that works in complete darkness. All vipers also use the forked tongue and the vomeronasal organ to follow scent trails. True vipers without pits rely more heavily on vision, vibration and chemical cues, which is one reason pit and pitless lineages hunt in somewhat different ways.

Wild rattlesnakes are slow-maturing animals, with many species taking several years to reach breeding size and individuals in cooler regions reproducing only every second or third year.
