Vipera berus, the European viper or common adder, is one species within Viperinae. Calling it a viper is correct in the same way that calling a wolf a canid is correct: it names the family.
A note on naming: Viper names the family Viperidae, not a species. European viper normally means Vipera berus, but several other Vipera species live in Europe, the asp viper and the nose-horned viper among them, so the phrase is only precise alongside a scientific name.
Telling them apart
Family-level identification rests on skull anatomy rather than pattern, so the useful cues for the European viper are its own. Adults are usually stocky for their length, with a distinct dark zigzag along the back, a vertical pupil and a dark head marking often read as an X or a V. Ground colour tends to grey in males and brown in females. Melanistic all-black individuals occur in some populations and show no zigzag, which is the commonest trap.

The European viper takes small mammals, lizards, amphibians and nestlings, with diet shifting by region and age, since young snakes rely more on lizards and small amphibians. In many species prey is released after the strike and relocated by scent.

Cool climates shape the European viper's year. It brumates through winter, often communally, emerges early to bask, and males may perform the so-called dance of the adders, a wrestling contest between rivals in spring. Reproduction is viviparous, and in the coldest parts of the range females may reproduce only every second or third year because they cannot rebuild reserves faster. The family's shared invention is the fang mechanism: long hollow fangs mounted on a maxilla that rotates, folding them along the roof of the mouth when closed and swinging them forward on the strike. Lifespan and life stages
Published lifespans for the European viper generally run to around ten to fifteen years in the wild, with captive individuals recorded longer, and northern populations mature later than southern ones because the active season is short. Family-wide figures are much broader, with some larger vipers living well past twenty years in collections. Because growth and maturity track available warmth and food, a single age figure means little without knowing which population produced it.
