Lifespan and life stages

Published lifespans for the European viper generally run to around ten to fifteen years in the wild, with captive individuals recorded longer, and northern populations mature later than southern ones because the active season is short. Family-wide figures are much broader, with some larger vipers living well past twenty years in collections. Because growth and maturity track available warmth and food, a single age figure means little without knowing which population produced it.

Is the European viper the same animal as the adder?
In Britain and much of northern Europe, yes: adder is the everyday name for Vipera berus, and European viper is the same species under a book name. The word adder is looser elsewhere and is attached to unrelated snakes, such as the death adder of Australia, which is an elapid rather than a viper at all. Check the scientific name when precision matters.
Are all vipers pit vipers?
No. Pit vipers form the subfamily Crotalinae and are defined by the loreal pit between eye and nostril that senses infrared. True vipers, subfamily Viperinae, have no pit, and that group includes the European viper, the asp viper, the puff adder and the Gaboon viper. Both subfamilies share the hinged hollow fangs that define the family, so the pit is a subfamily feature rather than a family one.
How far north does the European viper actually live?
Further than any other snake. Populations extend beyond the Arctic Circle in Scandinavia and northern Russia, and the species ranges east to the Pacific coast, giving it the widest distribution of any terrestrial snake. Why do some European vipers have no zigzag?
Melanistic individuals occur naturally in many populations and are entirely black or very dark, so the dorsal zigzag is invisible against the ground colour. Dark colouring may warm faster in cool climates, which would suit northern and upland sites. Because the standard field mark disappears in these animals, all-black adders are regularly misidentified, and pattern alone should never be the only feature relied on.
