How they are related
Whales are cetaceans, mammals whose ancestors were four-limbed land animals; their closest living land relatives are even-toed hoofed mammals. Sharks are cartilaginous fish that diverged from bony fish long before mammals existed. The whale shark's name reflects its size and filter feeding, not any relationship — it is a fish.
Telling them apart
Watch for breathing. A whale surfaces with a visible and often audible blow and moves in a rolling motion, with flukes lifting clear of the water on a deep dive in many species. A shark has no reason to surface and its tail sweeps side to side. Fluke orientation is the definitive cue where the tail is visible.
