Most sharks look nothing like that.
If the sentence starts with sharks are, ask which of several hundred species it means. If it describes a five-metre grey-and-white predator off a temperate coast with a conical snout and a crescent tail, it means the great white specifically. The reliable test is scale: any claim that fits every shark must also fit a hand-sized lanternshark and a plankton-filtering whale shark.
Habitat and distribution
The group as a whole occupies almost every marine environment: coral reefs, kelp forests, continental shelves, the open ocean, polar waters where the Greenland shark lives, and the deep sea where much of the undescribed diversity sits. The bull shark travels far up tropical rivers. The great white occupies a much narrower slice — temperate and subtropical coastal waters and long offshore crossings between them.
Diet and ecological role
Shark diets span filter-feeding on plankton in the whale and basking sharks, crushing molluscs and crustaceans in bottom-dwelling species, scavenging in the deep sea and taking small schooling fish in many mid-water species. The great white represents the high-profile end of that spectrum, and even it changes through life, with young animals feeding mainly on fish and other sharks before larger prey becomes part of the diet.

Behaviour across the group is equally varied: reef sharks resting on the bottom by day, deep-sea species hanging almost motionless in cold water, schooling species aggregating around seamounts, and long-distance migrants crossing ocean basins.
