How they are related
The great white belongs to Lamnidae within Lamniformes, alongside the mako and porbeagle sharks. Telling them apart
Nothing else does what the cephalofoil does. Seen from any angle, the hammerhead's head widens sideways with the eyes at the outer tips, while the great white's snout is a simple cone. Body shape follows: the great white is heavily built and torpedo-shaped with a nearly symmetrical crescent tail, and hammerheads are more slender with a strongly asymmetric upper tail lobe. Colour helps too, with the great white's sharp countershading boundary being distinctive.
If the head widens sideways with the eyes at the tips, it is a hammerhead, whatever its size. If the snout is a plain cone on a thick torpedo body with a crescent tail and a hard-edged grey-to-white boundary along the flank, it is a great white. A group of large sharks circling a seamount by day is almost certainly hammerheads, not great whites.
Habitat and distribution
The great white occupies temperate and subtropical coastal and oceanic waters worldwide, and tagged individuals have crossed entire ocean basins, tolerating cold water that most large sharks avoid. Hammerheads are concentrated in warm temperate and tropical seas, over continental shelves, around islands and seamounts, with some species using shallow bays and estuaries as nurseries. Their ranges overlap in warm temperate waters but the great white extends far further into the cold.
Diet and ecological role
Both are predators, but at different targets. Great whites shift diet with age, taking mainly fish and smaller sharks when young and adding marine mammals as they grow, a change reflected in tooth shape and jaw development. Hammerheads focus on bony fish, cephalopods and crustaceans, with great hammerheads notable for taking rays; the bonnethead is unusual among sharks in that seagrass forms a documented part of its digested intake.
