How they are related
Both belong to the order Crocodylia, but to different families within it. Crocodiles form Crocodylidae. Caimans sit in Alligatoridae as the subfamily Caimaninae, making them closer relatives of the American alligator than of any crocodile. The split between the two families is deep and long predates the modern species, so the strong outward resemblance reflects a conserved and highly effective body plan rather than recent common ancestry.

Both are opportunistic carnivores whose diet shifts with body size.
