Both belong to the genus Canis, making them close relatives that diverged relatively recently. That closeness has a consequence: they can and do interbreed where their ranges meet. Coyotes in north-eastern North America carry documented wolf and domestic dog ancestry, which is part of why they are larger than western coyotes. The popular term coywolf oversimplifies a genuinely complex mixed ancestry that varies from population to population.

Proportions beat absolute size, because size is hard to judge without a reference object. A wolf has a broad blocky muzzle, ears that look short for its head, long legs and a deep chest, giving a heavy, powerful outline. A coyote has a narrow pointed muzzle, ears that look too big for its head, and a slighter frame with a noticeably bushier tail carried low. Tracks differ in size, though substrate and gait complicate this.

Habitat and distribution
Wolves need large territories with sufficient large prey and, historically, tolerance from people — a requirement that removed them from much of their range. They persist in forest, tundra, mountain and steppe where those conditions hold. Coyotes occupy nearly every habitat in North America including deserts, grassland, forest and dense urban areas, and their ability to live near people at high density is the core of their success.
Diet and ecological role
Wolves are specialists on large hoofed mammals, and cooperative hunting is what makes prey many times their own mass accessible. Their kills also support scavengers throughout the ecosystem. Coyotes are true generalists: rodents and rabbits form the bulk of the diet, supplemented with fruit, insects, carrion, deer fawns and, in cities, human food waste.
