How they are related
Both belong to the dog family, Canidae, but to different branches. Wolves are in the genus Canis with coyotes, jackals and the domestic dog. Foxes are spread across several genera, with the familiar red fox in Vulpes. They are relatives within one family rather than close kin, and they cannot interbreed — a common misconception.
Telling them apart
Size settles it where there is any reference, but proportions are safer. A fox has a narrow pointed muzzle, large triangular ears, a slight frame and a very bushy tail often longer than half its body. A wolf is heavy-chested and long-legged with a broad blocky muzzle and comparatively short rounded ears. Pupil shape confirms it at close range.

Habitat and distribution
Wolves need large territories with sufficient large prey and historically required tolerance from people, which removed them from much of their range. Foxes occupy nearly every habitat in the northern hemisphere, including deserts, tundra, farmland and dense urban areas, and the red fox has one of the widest natural distributions of any land mammal.
Diet and ecological role
Wolves are specialists on large hoofed mammals, and their kills support scavengers throughout the ecosystem. Foxes are true omnivores, taking rodents, rabbits, birds, insects, earthworms, fruit and carrion, and they cache surplus food in shallow scrapes. Dietary flexibility is why foxes thrive in modified landscapes where wolves cannot.
Behaviour
Wolf packs are family units — a breeding pair and offspring of several years — and they hunt, travel and raise pups cooperatively. Foxes are largely solitary outside the breeding season, hunting alone and defending a home range. The fox's mousing pounce, in which it leaps high and drops nose-first onto prey located by hearing beneath snow or vegetation, has no wolf equivalent.
Senses and adaptations
The fox's vertical pupils and exceptionally acute low-frequency hearing let it locate rodents moving beneath snow or dense vegetation, and there is evidence that red foxes orient their mousing pounces preferentially along a north-south axis, which has been interpreted as possible magnetic sensing. Wolves rely more on endurance, scent tracking and coordinated group pursuit.
