The short answer

They occupy the same streets from opposite ends of the food chain. A fox is a carnivoran in the family Canidae — the red fox is the reference animal — ranging over an area measured in hectares or square kilometres and eating small mammals among much else. A rat is a small rodent that lives within metres of its burrow and breeds several times a year. Rodents are one component of a fox's very broad diet, so the pair are linked ecologically as predator and prey rather than as rivals.

A fox is a wide-ranging canid predator that covers a large territory and breeds once a year; a rat is a small, sedentary, rapidly reproducing rodent that is one of the many things a fox eats.

Urban colonisation is usually discussed one species at a time, which hides the fact that a town has to supply a working food chain and not just a food supply. One species was carried into cities by trade and the other walked in on its own, which is why their urban histories look nothing alike.

How they are related

Both are placental mammals, and that is the extent of the connection. Rats are rodents of the genus Rattus, family Muridae. Fox is a general name for several genera of small canids, principally the true foxes of the genus Vulpes, of which the red fox, Vulpes vulpes, is the most widespread and is used as the reference animal here. Canidae sits in the order Carnivora, so the fox is more closely related to a dog, a bear or a weasel than to any rodent.

A note on naming: Fox covers several genera of small canids, and this page uses the red fox, Vulpes vulpes, as its reference; Arctic, fennec and grey foxes differ substantially in size, range and ecology. Rat here means the genus Rattus with the brown rat as reference.

Telling them apart

Confusion is essentially impossible at adult size, but the diagnostic features are worth stating. A red fox has upright triangular ears, a narrow muzzle, slit-shaped pupils, long legs and a long bushy tail usually tipped white, with rusty upperparts and dark stockings. A rat is a small grizzled rodent with small rounded ears, a blunt muzzle, short legs and a long, sparsely haired, scaly tail. Only tracks in soft ground, seen without scale, ever create real doubt.

Habitat and distribution

Red foxes occupy an unusually wide range of habitat — woodland, farmland, moorland, tundra edge, coast, suburb and city centre — across much of the northern hemisphere, plus introduced populations in Australia. Rats in the strict sense are Asian and Indo-Pacific in origin, with two species carried worldwide into drains, embankments, farm buildings, stores and ships. In towns their overlap is close but stratified: the fox works gardens, verges, parks and streets, while the rodent works the ground beneath and inside structures.

Diet and ecological role

The fox is one of the most catholic feeders among carnivorans, taking small mammals, birds, earthworms, beetles, fruit in quantity, carrion and, in towns, a great deal of discarded human food; rodents are a recurring but far from exclusive component. Rats are omnivores from the other direction, with a base of seeds, fruit, shoots and invertebrates, extended in the brown rat to eggs, small vertebrates, carrion and refuse. Both cache surplus food, and both adjust seasonally to whatever is abundant.

Behaviour

Foxes are mainly nocturnal and crepuscular in settled landscapes, live in family groups based on a breeding pair with occasional non-breeding helpers, hold territories marked with scent and urine, and use a varied vocal repertoire including the familiar scream. Rats are colonial, organised around related females, and communicate chiefly by scent and by calls above human hearing. Both follow established routes, and both are notably cautious with new objects placed in familiar ground.

Senses and adaptations

The fox's hearing is the celebrated feature, biased toward low frequencies and accurate enough to place a small mammal moving under grass or snow, which is what makes the high vertical pounce work. Slit pupils and a reflective layer behind the retina support low-light vision. The rat answers with smell as its dominant sense, long whiskers that read surfaces in complete darkness, a strong preference for contact with walls, and hearing that extends well above what people can detect.

Lifespan and life stages

Both are short-lived where they live alongside people. Free-living red foxes are commonly described as having high mortality in the first year and relatively few surviving to advanced ages, with road traffic a major cause in settled landscapes, though captive animals live considerably longer. Commensal brown rats frequently fail to reach a year in the wild, with animals under human care usually reaching around two to three years. Neither figure describes any individual animal reliably.

Neither is domesticated, and both have complicated public reputations. Urban foxes are the subject of continuing debate about feeding, denning under buildings and interactions with pets, while rodents in buildings are a food-safety and structural matter. Both fall under wildlife, public-health and, in some countries, specific legal frameworks that vary widely. Questions about either animal on a property belong with local authorities, licensed professionals and, for anything involving an animal's health, a veterinarian.

Keeping them: what to understand first

Foxes are kept in a small number of jurisdictions, prohibited in many, and are not domesticated animals whatever their appearance suggests; fancy rats descended from the brown rat are widely kept. Neither is recommended here. Wild canids have spatial, dietary and behavioural needs that households do not meet, and legality, welfare capacity and access to a veterinarian experienced with the animal determine these questions rather than enthusiasm for the species.

Conservation context

The red fox is one of the most widely distributed wild carnivorans and is not of concern at species level, but other members of the genus have far narrower ranges and different pressures, and the species is treated as an introduced problem in Australia. Rats present the parallel case: two species are globally abundant while many wild members of the genus are restricted and poorly documented, and introduced rats are a well-established pressure on island wildlife.

Do urban foxes control rat numbers?
Not reliably. Foxes do take rodents among a very wide range of foods, but rat populations are governed mainly by food supply and shelter, and a fast-breeding rodent can replace losses quickly. Predation by a generalist that also eats worms, fruit, birds and discarded food is unlikely to hold a well-fed population down. Treating any predator as a substitute for addressing food availability misreads how both animals work.
How did each animal end up in cities?
By opposite routes. The commensal rats arrived as cargo, spreading along shipping and trade networks over centuries and moving directly into stores, drains and buildings. Red foxes colonised towns much more recently and under their own power, moving in from surrounding countryside during the twentieth century as suburbs with gardens, sheds and reliable food waste spread outward to meet them.
Why does the fox range so much further than the rat?
Body size and trophic position set it. A predator eating scattered prey and fruit must search a large area to meet its needs, so red fox territories are measured in hectares and expand where food is thin. A rat feeding on concentrated, renewable resources near shelter has no reason to travel, and every reason not to, since crossing open ground exposes it. Small range and heavy cover use are part of its ecology.
What does the fox's low-frequency hearing do?
It allows the animal to locate a small mammal moving unseen beneath grass, leaf litter or snow. Fox hearing is unusually sensitive at low frequencies, in the range where rustling and scratching by small prey produce sound, and the high arcing pounce that follows is a way of dropping onto a target the animal has heard rather than seen. It is one of the most distinctive hunting mechanics among small canids.
Do the two ever use the same shelter sites?
They use the same kinds of structure at different scales. Foxes den under sheds, decking, outbuildings and in enlarged burrows, sometimes taken over from other species. Rats burrow against foundations and banks and occupy wall cavities and subfloor voids. Both are exploiting the cavity space that gardens and buildings create, but a fox needs an opening and chamber far larger than a rodent does, so direct sharing is not usual.
