Scale aside, the tail is the giveaway: a capybara has none to speak of, only a vestigial stub, while a rat's tail is long and immediately obvious. A capybara is barrel-bodied with a blunt squared muzzle, short thick legs and partly webbed toes, and males carry a raised bare scent gland on the snout known as the morrillo. A rat is slender and pointed-faced with a long tail and unwebbed feet built for running and climbing.

Habitat and distribution
Capybaras need water and grass together, living in wetland, flooded savanna, gallery forest and river margins across much of South America east of the Andes, and retreating into water when disturbed. Rats live wherever people do, and also along riverbanks, farmland, coasts and islands they reached by ship. There is no meaningful overlap in how each uses its landscape, even where introduced rats occur inside the capybara's range.
Diet and ecological role
The capybara is a grazer, taking grasses and aquatic vegetation, with a large caecum housing the microbes that break down that fibre and a habit of eating soft morning droppings so the material passes through a second time. Rats are omnivores whose diet shifts with the setting: grain in a store, invertebrates in a hedgerow, discarded food in a city. One animal has specialised in a single abundant low-quality resource, the other in flexibility itself.

Capybaras commonly live around eight to ten years in protected conditions and usually less in the wild, where losses among young animals are heavy. Rats are far shorter-lived, with wild individuals often not reaching a year and protected animals reaching roughly two to three.
