How they are related
Both are rodents, but from opposite ends of the order. Rats are murids of the Old World, in the family Muridae. Guinea pigs are caviomorphs, part of a South American radiation that also produced capybaras, chinchillas and agoutis, and the domestic guinea pig is Cavia porcellus, an animal domesticated in the Andes long before European contact. Their last common ancestor lies deep in rodent history, which is why so little of their biology corresponds.
Telling them apart
Nobody confuses them in the flesh. A guinea pig is a stocky, tailless-looking animal several times the weight of a rat, with a broad blunt head, short legs and no visible tail. A rat is longer, leaner and carries a naked scaly tail nearly as long as its body, with a more pointed face and larger, more mobile ears. Their voices differ as plainly as their outlines do.

Habitat and distribution
Wild cavies live in South American grassland, scrub and rocky slopes, feeding at the surface in social groups and sheltering in vegetation or in burrows dug by other animals rather than excavating much themselves. Brown rats occupy human landscapes worldwide, digging their own systems in banks, under buildings and along waterways. One is a specialised grazer of open country; the other is a generalist that goes wherever people go.
Diet and ecological role
The guinea pig is a strict herbivore whose gut depends on a continuous flow of fibrous forage, and it shares with primates and a few other mammals the loss of the enzyme needed to make vitamin C, so the vitamin has to come from food. The rat is an omnivore that manufactures its own vitamin C and can exploit grain, fruit, invertebrates, eggs and scavenged material as circumstances change around it.

Guinea pigs are noisy in a range people hear easily, using whistles, purrs, chutters and rumbles constantly within a group, and their response to alarm is to freeze or scatter a short distance rather than run far. Guinea pigs have wide-set eyes giving a broad field of view, hearing tuned to their own whistled calls, and continuously growing cheek teeth as well as incisors, worn down by fibrous forage. Rats depend heavily on active whisker sweeping and on smell, hear well into ultrasound, and see poorly. Both are prone to age-related conditions toward the end, and both benefit from veterinary attention as they age, but the scale of the commitment is not the same. The guinea pig was domesticated in the Andes as a food animal and remains one in parts of South America, alongside its worldwide role as a companion animal.
