Rats are rodents: the genus Rattus sits in the family Muridae within Rodentia, the order defined by a single pair of ever-growing incisors in each jaw. Telling them apart
Look at the front of the animal first. A shrew's snout runs out into a slender, whiskered, constantly moving point that overhangs the lower jaw, and the eyes are so small they can be hard to find in a photograph. A rat has a blunter face, obvious dark eyes and ears that stand clear of the coat. Add size — most shrews are shorter than an adult rat's tail alone — and the two rarely stay confusable for long.

The ranges overlap widely across Europe, Asia and, through introduction, much of the rest of the world. Rats occupy river banks, farmland, coastlines, sewers, ports and buildings, and the brown rat in particular has followed human settlement across nearly every continent. Both may be found in the same hedgerow without meeting often.

A shrew is an invertebrate hunter, working over earthworms, beetle larvae, spiders, woodlice and slugs, and some species take small vertebrates or cache prey. The energy demand is relentless and dictates the foraging schedule. A rat eats almost anything: grain, fallen fruit, seeds, invertebrates, discarded human food and carrion, with local populations converging on whatever is abundant. That flexibility is the main reason rats colonise so many landscapes while shrews stay tied to invertebrate-rich cover.
Behaviour
Shrews are largely solitary and intolerant of one another outside brief breeding contact, patrolling small territories in short intense bouts around the clock rather than following a clean day-night rhythm. Rats are social, living in loose colonies with recognisable burrow systems, shared paths and a strong tendency to investigate and then avoid unfamiliar objects. Rats combine strong olfaction with highly developed whisker sensing, sweeping the vibrissae to read surfaces in the dark, and they hear well into ultrasound, using calls above human hearing in social exchanges.

Lifespan and life stages
Both are short-lived, but for different reasons. Many shrews complete a whole life inside a single year and a half, with the metabolic cost of the body plan setting a hard ceiling, and some northern species even undergo documented seasonal shrinkage of the skull and braincase.
