Habitat and distribution
Bandicoots occupy heath, woodland, rainforest edge, grassland and suburban gardens through Australia, New Guinea and adjacent islands, sheltering in shallow nests of grass and litter rather than deep burrow systems. Rats began in Asia and now occur nearly everywhere people have travelled, using river banks, farmland, coastal scrub, ports and buildings. In Australian suburbs the two genuinely share ground at night, which is where most of the everyday confusion is generated.
Diet and ecological role
Both are omnivores, and this is where convergence is real.
