When a hamster is carrying food, the bulges running along its cheeks and neck are unmistakable.

Wild hamsters are animals of dry grassland, steppe and cultivated land in Eurasia, digging individual burrows with separate chambers for sleeping and for stored seed. The wild range of the Syrian hamster is small and restricted, which contrasts sharply with the near-global spread of commensal rats.

Rats are opportunistic omnivores, taking grain, fruit, invertebrates, eggs and human food waste, and adjusting readily to whatever a place offers.
