How they are related
Both sit in the superfamily Muroidea but in different families. Hamsters are cricetids, in the subfamily Cricetinae, roughly eighteen to nineteen species including the golden or Syrian hamster, Mesocricetus auratus, and the dwarf species of the genus Phodopus. Gerbils belong to Muridae, the family of mice and rats, in the subfamily Gerbillinae, which holds around a hundred species across Africa and Asia. The one kept in homes is almost always the Mongolian gerbil, Meriones unguiculatus, so a gerbil is a closer relative of a house mouse than of any hamster.

Telling them apart
Start with the tail. A gerbil carries a fully furred tail about as long as its body, finished with a small darker tuft, while a hamster's tail is a stub that is easy to overlook entirely. Body shape confirms it: gerbils are lightly built with long hind legs and often sit upright on them, whereas hamsters are broad and low with a rounded rump and small ears. Cheeks bulging along the sides of the head belong only to the hamster.

Habitat and distribution
Wild hamsters occupy dry grassland, steppe and cultivated land across parts of Eurasia, each animal maintaining its own burrow with separate chambers for sleeping, storing seed and depositing waste. Mongolian gerbils live in the semi-desert and dry steppe of Mongolia and neighbouring parts of China, where a family group shares one burrow system with several entrances. The telling contrast is occupancy rather than climate: one burrow holding one hamster, against a burrow shared by a related group.
Diet and ecological role
Both are seed-led feeders that also take green plant material and small invertebrates, and both cache heavily against lean seasons. The mechanics differ. A hamster loads its cheek pouches, carries a surprising volume in a single trip and empties the load into a store chamber. A gerbil ferries food in its mouth and forepaws instead, making many more journeys, and a family group may build a communal store. Neither animal grazes continuously the way a rabbit or a guinea pig does.
Behaviour
A Syrian hamster defends its space and reacts to another hamster as an intruder rather than a companion; dwarf species are more variable but still frequently territorial. Mongolian gerbils are the opposite, grooming one another, sleeping in contact and digging cooperatively within a family group, and marking shared space with a sebaceous gland on the belly. Gerbils also drum both hind feet rapidly against the ground, a signal recorded in alarm and social contexts, which hamsters do not do at all.
Senses and adaptations
The gerbil is built for dry open country. Enlarged auditory bullae give it acute low-frequency hearing, useful where a predator may be heard before it is seen, and its kidneys conserve water so effectively that much of its intake can come from food. Hamsters rely heavily on scent and on their whiskers, having modest eyesight, and Syrians carry prominent flank glands used in marking. Lifespan and life stages
Neither is long-lived. Hamsters under care commonly reach around two to three years, and Mongolian gerbils are often quoted at roughly two to four, so a gerbil may last slightly longer without either approaching the commitment of a rabbit or a chinchilla. Both reached homes through laboratories. The pet and research population of golden hamsters is widely reported to descend from a very small founder group collected in Syria in the 1930s, which is why captive animals are unusually uniform. Mongolian gerbils followed a comparable path through twentieth-century laboratory colonies. Because gerbils are hardy in dry conditions, some jurisdictions treat escapees as an establishment risk and prohibit keeping them, California and Hawaii being the usual examples, so local legislation is worth checking first.

Suitability belongs to the household rather than to the species. The clearest practical divergence is social: most kept hamsters need to live alone, while gerbils are normally kept with compatible companions of their own kind. Both are small, quick and easily startled, both want far more depth of substrate for digging than shallow enclosures offer, and gerbils are prohibited in some jurisdictions. Housing, diet and health decisions belong with a veterinarian experienced in small mammals.
