How they are related

The gerbil belongs to the gerbil subfamily within Muridae, a group of well over a hundred species spread across dry Africa and Asia; the one usually kept is the Mongolian gerbil, and statements about pet gerbils generally refer to it rather than to the whole group. The guinea pig is a caviomorph rodent of South American descent, in the same broad radiation as capybaras and chinchillas. They are rodents together and little else.
