This pair is a reminder that shape is not ancestry. True moles are talpids in the order Eulipotyphla, whose other members include shrews, hedgehogs, moonrats and solenodons. Rats are rodents. Adding to the muddle, golden moles of Africa and marsupial moles of Australia are neither talpids nor rodents either.
A note on naming: Mole is a common name applied to many genera within Talpidae, and loosely to the golden moles of Africa and the marsupial moles of Australia, which are unrelated to talpids and to each other. Statements here describe true moles, with the European mole as the reference animal. Rat means the genus Rattus, referenced to the brown rat.
Telling them apart
A mole seen closely is unmistakable: velvety fur that lies flat in any direction, a cylindrical body, a pink pointed snout, no visible ears, and forelimbs turned permanently outward into broad spades. A rat has a coat with a definite lie, obvious ears, functional eyes, ordinary forepaws and a long scaly tail. Mole tails are short and are often carried upright underground. Moles are seldom seen above ground at all, which is itself a strong clue.

If the teeth form a continuous row of small sharp points, the animal is not a rodent at all. If there is a single pair of orange-faced chisel incisors with a bare gap behind them, it is a rodent whatever else it looks like.
Habitat and distribution
Moles live inside the soil, maintaining tunnel systems whose spoil is pushed up as molehills, and they need ground soft enough to work and rich enough in invertebrates, which is why pasture, deciduous woodland and gardens suit them. Rats use burrows too, but as shelter rather than as a foraging structure, and they range widely above ground along walls, banks and waterways. Only the mole spends effectively its entire life beneath the surface.
Diet and ecological role
A mole's tunnel network functions as a trap in itself: earthworms and soil invertebrates fall into the runs and are collected on patrol. Some species store immobilised earthworms in chambers, a natural larder documented in European moles. Behaviour
Moles are largely solitary and territorial, meeting mainly to breed, and they work in repeated bouts of activity and rest through the twenty-four hour cycle rather than following day and night. Rats are social, colonial and hierarchical, and their movements run along established routes marked with scent. A mole meeting another mole in a tunnel usually reacts with hostility, whereas a rat meeting a colony member it recognises usually does not.
