How they are related

Telling them apart

A mole seen closely is unmistakable: velvety fur that lies flat in any direction, a cylindrical body, a pink pointed snout, no visible ears, and forelimbs turned permanently outward into broad spades. A rat has a coat with a definite lie, obvious ears, functional eyes, ordinary forepaws and a long scaly tail. Mole tails are short and are often carried upright underground. Moles are seldom seen above ground at all, which is itself a strong clue.
