Mole vs Shrew: Key Differences Explained

The short answer

Both are small insect-eating mammals rather than rodents, and the front feet decide it. A mole has enormously enlarged forelimbs turned outward like paddles, with broad spade-shaped palms, a cylindrical body, velvety fur that lies in any direction, and eyes so reduced they are usually hidden. They are related at order level but sit in separate families, and neither is a rodent.

How they are related

True moles are the family Talpidae and true shrews the family Soricidae, both within Eulipotyphla, the insectivore order that also holds hedgehogs and solenodons. The names travel badly: golden moles belong to Chrysochloridae in the African group Afrotheria, marsupial moles are marsupials, and elephant shrews and tree shrews are neither shrews nor closely related to them. So mole and shrew are useful shorthand for a body plan more often than they are precise taxonomic labels.

A note on naming: Mole and shrew are both broad common names. True moles are Talpidae and true shrews Soricidae, but golden moles, marsupial moles, elephant shrews and tree shrews carry the same words while belonging to entirely different lineages.

Telling them apart

Check the front feet first. A mole's forelimbs are so enlarged and so obviously turned outward that no other small mammal in the same habitat looks remotely similar, and its eyes are effectively invisible. A shrew looks like a slim mouse with an exaggerated pointed nose and small visible eyes, and it moves in quick nervous bursts. Teeth also help: shrew teeth are often tipped reddish-brown from iron deposition in several genera, which mice never show.

Habitat and distribution

Moles occupy soils they can tunnel efficiently, favouring moist, workable ground in grassland, pasture, woodland, gardens and river meadows, and they are largely absent from very dry, rocky or waterlogged sites. Shrews use a much wider spread of habitat, including woodland floor, hedgerow, grassland, marsh and even alpine ground, and several species are semi-aquatic. The two overlap constantly in the same fields, but they occupy different layers of the same few centimetres of ground.

Diet and ecological role

Both are invertebrate specialists with enormous appetites relative to size. Moles take earthworms above all, plus insect larvae and other soil animals, and several species store immobilised worms in caches within the tunnel system. Shrews eat insects, spiders, worms, snails and other small invertebrates, and some also take small vertebrates or carrion. In both cases the metabolic demand is high enough that prolonged periods without food are a serious problem for the animal.

Behaviour

Moles are solitary and territorial, maintaining tunnel systems they patrol repeatedly, and they push excavated soil to the surface as mounds while extending shallow feeding runs. Shrews are also aggressively solitary but active above ground, moving through runways in vegetation and litter and defending small territories with loud high-pitched calls. Some shrew species use ultrasonic pulses that appear to serve a simple echo-orientation function in cluttered spaces near the ground.

Senses and adaptations

Both trade vision for touch. Moles carry dense arrays of touch receptors on the snout, and the star-nosed mole's twenty-two fleshy rays form one of the most sensitive touch organs described in any mammal, allowing extremely rapid prey identification underground. Shrews combine a mobile whiskered snout with acute hearing, and several species produce ultrasonic calls that appear to give coarse spatial information in dense litter where sight is useless.

Lifespan and life stages

Shrews are famously short-lived, with many species completing a life in little more than a year to eighteen months, a pace consistent with their extreme metabolic rate. Moles generally live longer, with published figures commonly in the range of three to six years in the wild for well-studied species. Are moles and shrews rodents like mice?
Neither is a rodent. Both belong to Eulipotyphla, the insectivore order that also contains hedgehogs, whereas mice and voles are rodents in a completely separate order. The clearest tell is the teeth: rodents have a single pair of large ever-growing gnawing incisors, while moles and shrews have many small sharp teeth suited to invertebrates, with reddish tips in several shrew genera.
Did a mole or a shrew make the mounds of soil in my lawn?
Mounds of freshly excavated soil are a mole sign, because shrews do not dig extensive tunnel systems or push spoil to the surface. Shrews leave narrow runways worn through grass and litter instead. Do shrews dig tunnels the way moles do?

Several shrew species, including some short-tailed shrews, are documented as producing toxic saliva used to subdue invertebrate prey, which is unusual among mammals. Moles are not known to do this. Why do moles have such tiny eyes when shrews can see?
