How they are related
Hedgehogs are the subfamily Erinaceinae within Erinaceidae, part of the order Eulipotyphla that also contains shrews, moles and solenodons; around seventeen species are usually recognised across Europe, Africa and Asia. Porcupines are rodents, but not one group: the Old World Hystricidae and the New World Erethizontidae are separated by a substantial evolutionary distance and are not each other's nearest relatives. So the comparison actually spans three lineages, not two, all of which evolved spines independently.
A note on naming: Hedgehog covers around seventeen species in the subfamily Erinaceinae, while porcupine covers two rodent families that are not close relatives, so this page compares typical members rather than two fixed species.
Telling them apart
Size settles most cases before anything else. A hedgehog fits comfortably in two cupped hands, with a coat of short even spines over the back, a furred face and underside, and a small pointed snout. A porcupine is a substantial animal, in some species knee-high, with long banded quills that may be raised into a visibly loose crest and a blunt rodent muzzle. Quills lying loose on the ground indicate porcupine; hedgehog spines do not shed that way.

Habitat and distribution
Hedgehogs occupy hedgerow, woodland edge, grassland, scrub, gardens and parkland across Europe, Africa and Asia, and have been introduced to New Zealand. Porcupines are far more varied: African crested porcupines use savannah, rocky hillside and dry woodland, Asian species occupy forest and farmland, and North American porcupines range through conifer and mixed forest well into Canada. In parts of Africa, Asia and southern Europe the two genuinely coexist in the same countryside.
Diet and ecological role
The dietary split is complete. Hedgehogs are insectivores in the practical sense, taking beetles, earthworms, slugs, caterpillars and other invertebrates and occasionally eggs or carrion, which is why they are associated with garden pest reduction. Porcupines are herbivores, gnawing bark and cambium, cutting stems, and taking roots, tubers, fruit and foliage; the North American porcupine's winter bark-feeding can leave conspicuous scarring on trees. Neither animal's diet resembles the other's in any respect.
Behaviour
Hedgehogs are solitary, chiefly nocturnal foragers that patrol substantial distances for their size, and populations in cooler regions hibernate through winter. When alarmed they curl using a specialised muscle that draws the spiny skin over the whole body. Porcupines are also mainly nocturnal and largely solitary, though some Old World species share dens in family groups. Their alarm sequence is a display: quills raised, tail rattled, feet stamped, and the rump presented rather than the face.
Senses and adaptations
Both are scent-led nocturnal animals with modest eyesight. The hedgehog combines a sensitive nose and good hearing with an unusual behaviour called self-anointing, in which it works frothy saliva over its own spines after encountering a strong smell; the function is still debated. Porcupine quills are modified hairs, hollow in the rattling tail quills of some species, and New World quills carry microscopic backward-facing barbs that make them hard to dislodge once embedded.

Lifespan and life stages
Wild hedgehogs commonly live only a few years, with published averages frequently below five, while individuals under care have reached roughly a decade. Porcupine figures vary by species: North American porcupines have been recorded well past ten years and crested porcupines longer still under managed conditions. All of these are ranges drawn from limited datasets, and hibernation success, road mortality, predation and disease pull wild averages far below the maxima quoted for captivity.

Some hedgehog species, most often the African pygmy hedgehog, are kept as pets in certain countries, while ownership is restricted or prohibited in others; porcupines are wild animals and are not household animals anywhere. Whether any animal suits a particular household depends on local law, the space and routine available, the welfare needs of a nocturnal insectivore, access to a veterinarian experienced with the species, and a willingness to carry that responsibility for the animal's whole life.
