How they are related

Armadillos make up the order Cingulata within the superorder Xenarthra, sharing that grouping with sloths and anteaters, and they are exclusively American; roughly twenty living species are recognised depending on the authority consulted. Pangolins form the order Pholidota, with eight living species divided between Africa and Asia, and molecular work places them closest to the carnivorans. A very deep split separates the two orders, and neither has any relationship to reptiles despite the scaly impression both give.

Telling them apart

Read the surface of the armour. An armadillo's back divides into a front shield, a set of movable bands and a rear shield, with a tiled, pebbled texture and often coarse hairs projecting between plates. A pangolin is clad in large individual scales that overlap like roof tiles or artichoke leaves, each with a visible free edge. Pangolin scales are keratin and lie on the skin, whereas armadillo plates are bone and are effectively part of the skeleton.

Habitat and distribution

Armadillos occupy grassland, scrub, dry forest and rainforest across South and Central America, and the nine-banded armadillo has expanded into the southern United States. Pangolins inhabit African savannah and forest and a swathe of South and Southeast Asia, in country ranging from grassland to rainforest. Some pangolin species are strongly arboreal and use prehensile tails, while others are committed ground dwellers. The two groups have no natural overlap anywhere on the planet.

Diet and ecological role

Both dig into ant and termite nests, but they reach the same food by different routes. Armadillos are more flexible than their reputation suggests: many species take a wide spread of invertebrates plus some plant material, fungi and carrion, and their peg-like teeth cope with the variety. Pangolins are strict myrmecophages, drawing insects out with a long tongue and grinding them in a muscular stomach that sometimes contains swallowed grit. Pangolin diets are considerably narrower.

Behaviour

Armadillos are mostly solitary and mainly nocturnal or crepuscular, and they dig burrows for shelter; several species swim well, and some cross water either by inflating the gut or by walking along the bottom. Pangolins are likewise solitary and largely nocturnal, and their response to threat is to curl into a ball that the scales protect from most directions. Several pangolin species climb readily using prehensile tails, while others excavate deep burrows.

Senses and adaptations

Both are led by scent rather than sight. Armadillos have small eyes and weak vision, locating invertebrates by smell and touch below the surface, and their shells stay flexible because the movable bands hinge between the fixed shields. Pangolin scales are shed and regrown throughout life, are sharp-edged in several species, and interlock when the animal curls. The pangolin tongue is anchored far back near the pelvis, allowing extension remarkable for the animal's size.

Lifespan and life stages

Firm wild figures are scarce for both groups. Nine-banded armadillos are often cited at roughly twelve to fifteen years under managed care with shorter and less certain wild averages, and other armadillo species differ. Pangolin longevity is poorly documented because the animals historically did badly in captivity; individual records exist but should not be read as species norms. Small samples, species differences and the difficulty of following nocturnal burrowers make confident numbers unavailable for either order.
