How they are related

The giant anteater, Myrmecophaga tridactyla, is one of four living anteater species and belongs to the order Pilosa alongside the sloths, inside the New World superorder Xenarthra. The aardvark, Orycteropus afer, is the only surviving member of the order Tubulidentata and falls within Afrotheria, the African radiation that also produced elephants, hyraxes, sea cows and tenrecs. Nothing about their similarity reflects shared ancestry; it reflects the same job being done twice on separate landmasses.

A note on naming: The giant anteater is one of four living anteater species, so statements here about giant anteaters do not automatically apply to tamanduas or the silky anteater. Aardvark refers to a single species, Orycteropus afer, though regional populations vary in size and coat.

Telling them apart

The tail decides it in a glance. A giant anteater carries a spectacular plume-like tail, a narrow tube of a head with a tiny mouth opening, and a bold diagonal band of black bordered with white across the shoulder. An aardvark shows a thick hairless tail, tall upright ears, a blunt fleshy snout and sparse pale hair over pinkish-grey skin. Giant anteaters use grassland, savannah, wetland margins and forest from Central America through much of South America, favouring country with abundant ant and termite nests within reach. Aardvarks range widely across sub-Saharan Africa in savannah, grassland, woodland and bushland, essentially wherever termites are plentiful and soil is workable. An ocean separates the two ranges, so a genuine field confusion is impossible and the mix-up happens only in images, quizzes and museum labels.

Diet and ecological role

Both specialise on social insects and both deploy a long, sticky, exceptionally fast tongue. The giant anteater opens a nest with its claws, feeds for a short burst and moves on, visiting a great many nests across a day rather than destroying any one of them. The aardvark breaks into termite mounds and also takes ants, and unusually for a strict insectivore it is documented eating a wild cucurbit that supplies moisture. Neither chews in any conventional sense.

Behaviour

Giant anteaters are largely solitary and may be active by day or night depending on temperature and disturbance; a single young rides on the mother's back, its shoulder stripe lining up with hers so the pair reads as one animal. Aardvarks are strongly nocturnal, emerging well after dark and returning underground before daylight. Abandoned aardvark burrows are reused by warthogs, hyenas, porcupines, birds and reptiles, giving the species an outsized structural role in African ecosystems.

Senses and adaptations

Both are led by smell. The giant anteater locates nests almost entirely by scent, sees poorly, and flicks a tongue coated by unusually large salivary glands many times a minute. The aardvark pairs a keen nose with elaborate fleshy nasal structures and dense hair that filter dust, and it can fold its ears closed while digging. Aardvark cheek teeth lack enamel and grow continuously, an arrangement not found in any other living mammal.

Lifespan and life stages

Published figures for giant anteaters commonly cite around fourteen to sixteen years under managed care, with shorter and much less certain averages in the wild. Aardvark records in captivity have exceeded twenty years, while wild longevity is poorly measured because the animals are nocturnal, subterranean and difficult to follow. Both sets of numbers rest on small samples, and fire, drought, predation and vehicle strikes push wild averages well below any captive maximum.

No. Aardvark is sometimes used loosely as a synonym for anteater in casual speech, but the true anteaters are American xenarthrans in the order Pilosa, while the aardvark is the only living member of Tubulidentata and belongs to the African group Afrotheria. Calling an aardvark an anteater describes its diet accurately and its ancestry not at all, which is exactly where the confusion begins.
Do giant anteaters and aardvarks both lack teeth?
Only the giant anteater is genuinely toothless. Aardvarks have cheek teeth, but very unusual ones: they lack enamel, have no roots, grow continuously, and are built from bundled columns of dentine, which is what gives the order Tubulidentata its name. So if the animal in a photograph has any teeth at all, however strange they look, it is not a giant anteater.
Why does a giant anteater walk on its knuckles?
Its front claws are extremely long and are the tools it uses to break open hard nests, so keeping them sharp and undamaged matters. Folding the claws inward and bearing weight on the knuckles protects the tips during travel. Aardvarks solve the same problem differently, with shorter, blunter spade-shaped claws that tolerate ground contact, which lets them walk flat-footed on all four feet.

Only the aardvark does.
