Habitat and distribution
Echidnas are the most widely distributed native mammal in Australia, occupying desert, forest, heath, alpine country and suburban fringe, with long-beaked species restricted to New Guinea and adjacent highlands. Porcupines occupy an enormous span of habitat across three continents: African savannah and rocky hillside, Asian forest and farmland, and North American conifer and mixed woodland. The two groups have no natural overlap, so continent is a completely reliable first filter.
Diet and ecological role
An echidna breaks into ant and termite nests and soil with its foreclaws and collects prey on a long sticky tongue, grinding the catch between horny pads at the base of the tongue and the palate rather than with teeth.
