How they are related
Ants belong to Formicidae within Hymenoptera, alongside bees and wasps. Termites are now placed within Blattodea, the cockroach order, as a social lineage that arose from wood-feeding cockroaches. So the resemblance between them is convergent — two separate lineages independently evolving colonies with sterile workers, a reproductive caste and division of labour.

The caste systems differ fundamentally: ant workers are all female, whereas termite colonies contain workers of both sexes, and termite kings persist alongside the queen rather than dying after mating as ant males do.

Both rely heavily on chemical communication, laying and following pheromone trails and using alarm chemicals to recruit defenders. Termites additionally use substrate vibration, with soldiers of some species banging their heads against galleries to transmit alarm through the nest. Many termites are blind as workers, navigating entirely by chemistry and touch within enclosed galleries.
