Rat vs Hedgehog: Key Differences Explained
The short answer
A hedgehog is not a rodent. It belongs to Erinaceidae in the order Eulipotyphla, has no gnawing incisors, and carries several thousand short spines that it deploys by curling into a ball. How they are related
Rats are rodents, defined by one pair of continuously growing incisors in each jaw, and sit in the genus Rattus within Muridae. Hedgehogs belong to the subfamily Erinaceinae inside Erinaceidae, part of Eulipotyphla, an order built around small insect-eating mammals. Around seventeen hedgehog species are usually recognised across Europe, Africa and Asia. Nothing links the spines to rodents: spiny coats have appeared independently in several unrelated mammal groups, and this is one of those independent cases.
A note on naming: Hedgehog covers the subfamily Erinaceinae, with around seventeen species differing in size, climate and whether they hibernate at all. Rat here means the genus Rattus with the brown rat as reference, and neither name refers to a single species.
Telling them apart
Nobody mistakes an adult hedgehog for a rat once the spines are visible, so the real value is knowing what else to check. A hedgehog has a small, blunt, furred face with a soft pointed snout, short legs largely hidden under the spiny mantle, and a barely visible tail. A rat has an exposed body outline, long visible legs, prominent ears and a long scaly tail nearly as long as the body. Silhouette alone is decisive in torchlight.

Habitat and distribution
Both use hedgerow, woodland edge, rough grassland, parkland and suburban gardens across Europe and much of Asia, and hedgehogs additionally occur across parts of Africa with introduced populations in New Zealand. Rats have gone considerably further, colonising ports, cities, coastlines and islands worldwide. Within a shared garden they use it differently: the hedgehog patrols ground level under cover, while the rat moves along walls, banks and vegetation and climbs where it suits.
Diet and ecological role
The hedgehog is an invertebrate hunter, working through leaf litter and turf for beetles, earthworms, caterpillars, slugs and similar prey, with eggs or carrion taken opportunistically. That focus is why hedgehogs are associated with invertebrate turnover in gardens. Rats are among the most flexible omnivores of any mammal, taking grain, fruit, seeds, invertebrates, carrion and discarded human food, and switching readily. The two overlap only at the margins of an invertebrate meal.
Behaviour
Hedgehogs are solitary and nocturnal, covering surprising distances for their size in a night's foraging and returning to day nests of leaves and grass. Threatened, a hedgehog curls, tucking face, limbs and belly inside a sphere of spines and holding position. Rats live in colonies with established routes, burrow systems and social structure, and their response to disturbance is to break for cover. Neither animal seeks the other out and their paths cross without much consequence.
Senses and adaptations
Hedgehogs work by smell and hearing, with modest vision, and show an unexplained behaviour called self-anointing in which the animal works frothy saliva across its own spines after meeting a strong scent. Their spines are modified hairs, smooth and firmly rooted rather than barbed or shedding. Rats depend on olfaction, a highly developed whisker array swept across surfaces, and hearing well above human range, which they use for ultrasonic social calls.

Lifespan and life stages
Wild hedgehogs commonly live only a few years, with hibernation survival, road mortality and food availability all pulling averages down, and individuals under care have reached roughly a decade. Wild rats generally survive well under a year for similar reasons of predation and disease, and domesticated rats under care usually reach two to three years. Rats occupy the opposite cultural position despite being equally at home in the same landscapes, and simultaneously exist as laboratory animals and as domesticated companions. The same hedgerow can therefore hold one animal people actively encourage and one they rarely do.
Keeping them: what to understand first
This is the rare pairing where both animals turn up in homes, and the legal picture differs sharply between them. The rat's domestic form is long established and widely permitted. Hedgehog keeping rests on one species in particular, the African pygmy hedgehog, and is lawful in some jurisdictions, restricted in others and banned outright in several — so the first question about a hedgehog is a legal one rather than a husbandry one. Both are nocturnal, which shapes what living with either is actually like. Everything beyond that, husbandry included, belongs with a qualified veterinarian and the relevant authority.
Conservation context
Rats are among the world's most widespread mammals and need no protection anywhere.
