Stridulating quills have no rodent equivalent whatever and are one of the family's genuinely unshared traits.

How they are related

Used strictly, rat means a member of the genus Rattus in the family Muridae, order Rodentia, the largest order of mammals. Tenrec means a member of Tenrecidae, placed in the order Afrosoricida within Afrotheria — the African radiation that also holds elephants, hyraxes, sea cows, aardvarks and golden moles. The two lineages parted deep in placental history. The African otter shrews are treated as close kin of the Madagascan tenrecs, and their exact rank has been arranged differently by different authors, so check a current taxonomic source before quoting family limits.

A note on naming: Both names cover groups. Rat here means the genus Rattus, with the brown rat as the reference animal, and tenrec means the family Tenrecidae, whose internal arrangement and relationship to the African otter shrews have been treated differently by different authors.

Telling them apart

Start with the mouth. A rat shows two pairs of large orange-faced incisors and then a bare gap before the grinding teeth; a tenrec shows a continuous row of small sharp teeth with canines present. Then look at the covering: spines of any kind mean tenrec. Among the soft-furred shrew tenrecs the differences are subtler — a longer, finer, more mobile snout, smaller eyes, and a tail that is furred rather than obviously ringed and scaly. Overall size is no help, since the two groups overlap heavily.

Location settles the rest — outside Madagascar and mainland Africa the animal in front of you is not a tenrec, and inside Madagascar it may be either, because rats arrived there too.

Habitat and distribution

Tenrecs are a Madagascan story. The family occupies eastern rainforest, western dry forest, southern spiny thicket, montane forest and river systems, with the semi-aquatic web-footed tenrec in streams and several shrew tenrecs restricted to narrow altitudinal bands. Rats in the strict sense are Asian and Indo-Pacific forest, grassland and wetland rodents, and only the brown and black rat attached themselves to buildings, farms and ships. The two therefore share space only where introduced rats have reached Madagascar, which by now is much of the island.

Diet and ecological role

Most tenrecs are invertebrate feeders. Earthworms figure heavily in the diet of the streaked tenrecs, and the family also takes insects, spiders, other soil animals and, in some genera, small vertebrates or fruit; the web-footed tenrec forages for aquatic prey. Rats are broader still: seeds, fruit, nuts, shoots, fungi and invertebrates in the wild species, extending in the brown rat to eggs, small vertebrates, carrion and human refuse. Dietary breadth, rather than any anatomical advantage, is a large part of why rats travel so well.

Behaviour

Most tenrecs are solitary and nocturnal, meeting mainly to breed, and the spiny genera respond to disturbance by erecting quills and bunching the body. The lowland streaked tenrec is the exception, described in family parties that keep contact by stridulating with modified quills on the back. Rats live very differently: brown rats form colonies organised around related females, share and defend burrow systems, and run a dense scent-marking system that carries identity, status and reproductive condition between familiar animals.

Senses and adaptations

Both are dark-adapted animals that lead with something other than vision. Rats depend on smell and on long whiskers swept rhythmically across surfaces, letting them follow a wall or pipe in total darkness, and they hear far above the human range. Tenrecs likewise rely on smell and touch, with a long tactile snout, and the streaked tenrec's quill stridulation adds a channel that appears to work at close range within family groups. The hearing and vibration sensitivity of several tenrec genera remain incompletely described.

Lifespan and life stages

Comparable figures are scarce and should be handled with care. Free-living commensal brown rats are generally described as short-lived, with many not surviving a year, while animals under human care commonly reach around two to three years. Some tenrecs are reported living considerably longer than their body size would suggest, with captive records for hedgehog tenrecs running to a decade or more, which fits a pattern seen in mammals that use torpor. Captive records are not wild lifespans, and wild data for most tenrec species are thin.

People and these animals

The tenrec relationship with people is mostly indirect and mostly about land. Forest clearance across Madagascar has reduced habitat for many species, and the common tailless tenrec is taken as food in parts of the island. Rats sit at the opposite extreme, having travelled with human shipping to nearly everywhere and become one of the most intensively studied mammals in biology. On Madagascar the two relationships intersect, because introduced rats occupy exactly the forest floor that the smaller tenrecs use.

Keeping them: what to understand first

Lesser hedgehog tenrecs appear in the exotic pet trade in some countries, and fancy rats derived from Rattus norvegicus are widely kept. Neither is described here as suitable for anyone. Legality differs by jurisdiction, exotic insectivores have requirements that are easy to underestimate and hard to meet, and every housing, diet and health question belongs with a veterinarian experienced in the species concerned rather than with a natural-history page.

Conservation context

Assessments across Tenrecidae vary a great deal by species, with narrow-range shrew tenrecs of greater concern than widespread generalists, and habitat loss is the dominant pressure. Rats present the mirror image: abundant and expanding as introduced commensals, while many of the genus's own native Asian and Indo-Pacific species are poorly known and some are restricted to single islands. Introduced rats are documented as a serious pressure on island faunas, and responses to that are a matter for conservation agencies and specialists.

Are tenrecs a kind of rat?
No. Tenrecs belong to Tenrecidae in the order Afrosoricida, part of Afrotheria, while rats belong to the genus Rattus in Muridae, order Rodentia. The two groups sit on different major branches of the placental mammal tree, and their last common ancestor lived very deep in mammal history. The resemblance of some shrew tenrecs to small rodents is convergence on a workable small-mammal body plan, nothing more.
Why do tenrecs look like so many different animals?
