The short answer

How they are related

Both are deer in the family Cervidae, but they sit in different genera and are not especially close relatives within it. The moose is a distinct lineage adapted to browsing in cold wetlands. The animal North Americans call elk is a red deer relative, and its relationship to the European red deer has been reassessed more than once as genetic evidence accumulated. The name wapiti, borrowed from Shawnee, exists precisely to avoid the elk ambiguity.

A note on naming: Elk is ambiguous by region and refers to two different species. Moose and wapiti are unambiguous alternatives and are preferred wherever confusion is possible.

Habitat and distribution

Moose are animals of the boreal north, associated with willow and birch thickets, wetlands, lake margins and young regenerating forest, and they wade and swim readily to reach aquatic plants. Elk use open forest, forest edge, mountain meadow and grassland, and many populations migrate seasonally between high summer range and lower wintering ground. Where they overlap, the two use different parts of the landscape.

Diet and ecological role

Both are ruminants, but they feed differently. Moose are browsers, taking leaves, twigs and shoots from shrubs and trees, plus aquatic vegetation in summer — long legs and a mobile muzzle suit reaching into water and up into branches.
