How they are related
Beavers are the family Castoridae, with two living species, the North American beaver and the Eurasian beaver, which differ in skull and chromosome details and do not interbreed. Capybaras belong to Caviidae, the family that also holds guinea pigs and maras, within the South American caviomorph rodents. So both are rodents, but they sit in different suborders and their similarity is a shared response to semi-aquatic life rather than a close relationship.
A note on naming: Beaver covers two living species, the North American and Eurasian beavers, whose measurements and behaviour differ somewhat. Capybara usually means Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris, but a lesser capybara is recognised in parts of Panama, Colombia and Venezuela.
Telling them apart
The tail answers it before anything else. A beaver's flat, scaly, spatula-shaped tail is unlike that of any other mammal, and the animal is compact with short legs and a dense glossy coat. A capybara has no visible tail, a squared-off blunt head, longer legs, coarse thin brownish hair through which skin often shows, and slightly webbed feet. In water, a beaver rides low with the head barely clear; a capybara sits with the whole facial platform exposed.

Habitat and distribution
Beavers occupy streams, rivers, ponds and lakes bordered by deciduous trees across North America and much of Eurasia, having been reintroduced to parts of Europe after historic trapping removed them. Capybaras use rivers, marshes, flooded savannah, ranchland ponds and forest streams across much of South America east of the Andes. Both need permanent water, but the beaver needs woody vegetation to cut, while the capybara needs open grazing next to water.
Diet and ecological role
A beaver is a woody-plant specialist, eating bark and cambium, cutting twigs and stems, and taking aquatic plants seasonally; in cold regions it sinks a cache of branches near the lodge to feed on beneath ice. A capybara grazes grasses and aquatic vegetation, processing abrasive material with high-crowned teeth, and it practises coprophagy, reingesting droppings to extract more nutrition from a fibrous diet. The two feed at opposite ends of the plant.
Behaviour
Beavers live in stable family groups, work mainly at night, maintain dams and lodges continuously, and warn the family by slapping the tail hard on the water before diving. Capybaras are diurnal or crepuscular where undisturbed and shift to night activity where they are hunted, resting in shade during heat and retreating into water when alarmed. Capybara herds use a repertoire of whistles, clicks and barks, and the dominant male scent-marks with a prominent snout gland.
Senses and adaptations
The beaver is built for underwater work: valvular ears and nostrils, lips that close behind the incisors so it can cut wood while submerged, transparent nictitating membranes over the eyes, and a waterproof underfur maintained with oil from specialised glands. The capybara's adaptations are more about the surface, with eyes, ears and nostrils aligned high on the skull so the animal can rest almost entirely submerged while still watching and breathing.

Lifespan and life stages
Wild beavers are commonly cited at somewhere in the range of ten to twelve years, with individuals in protected settings living longer, and juvenile mortality substantially lowers any population average. Capybaras are often given roughly eight to ten years in the wild with longer figures under managed care, and predation pressure from large predators is heavy on young animals. Both sets of numbers come from limited studies and vary with region, predation and hunting pressure.

Beavers were trapped intensively for fur across centuries, which removed them from much of their range, and modern reintroductions have made them a focus of river restoration work as well as a source of flooding conflicts. Capybaras are hunted in parts of their range, ranched in some regions, and have established themselves in urban wetlands and around ranch ponds, where they are increasingly familiar to people. Both are wild animals under different legal regimes across their ranges.
Keeping them: what to understand first
Capybaras are kept by people in some jurisdictions and prohibited in many others, while beavers are wild animals not kept as pets. Whether any animal fits a household depends on local law, the space and permanent water a semi-aquatic grazer needs, the social requirements of a herd species, access to a veterinarian experienced with exotic rodents, and a commitment lasting the animal's whole life.
