Both are rodents, and that is close to where the similarity ends. A rat is a generalist in the genus Rattus, usually a few hundred grams, with a thin scaly tail and a life spent largely alongside people. A beaver belongs to Castoridae, a family with just two living species, one North American and one Eurasian, and is among the largest rodents alive, with a broad flat scaly tail, webbed hind feet and a habit of felling trees and damming water that reshapes whole streams.

The main difference

A rat is a small generalist rodent that slots into habitat already there; a beaver is a large semi-aquatic rodent that builds new habitat by damming running water.

How they are related

Rodentia splits deep into several major branches, and these two sit in different ones. The rat is a murid in Myomorpha, the mouse-related suborder. The beaver has a suborder largely to itself, Castorimorpha, and a family, Castoridae, that today holds only Castor canadensis in North America and Castor fiber across Eurasia. Both keep the rodent tooth plan, but their last common ancestor lies tens of millions of years back and nothing about beaver ecology follows from rat ecology.

Telling them apart

Size resolves this instantly in life, though photographs without scale can mislead. Look at the tail: a beaver's is a broad, flat, black, scaly paddle unlike any other mammal's, while a rat's is a thin round cord. Look at the hind feet, which are large and webbed on a beaver and not on a rat. A beaver's small eyes and ears sit high on a blunt head, whereas the rat's muzzle is pointed and its ears are proportionally much larger.

Habitat and distribution

Beavers are tied to fresh water, using streams, rivers, lakes and the ponds they create for themselves, with bank burrows or stick lodges entered below the waterline. Rats occupy a far wider set of situations, from sewers, farm buildings and city waterfronts to hedgerows, saltmarsh and remote islands reached by ship. Their ranges overlap wherever a river runs through a town, but the two animals are using that river in entirely different ways.

Diet and ecological role

Beavers are strict herbivores, eating bark, cambium, twigs, aquatic plants and herbaceous growth, and they cache branches underwater so food remains reachable when the surface freezes. Rats are omnivores taking whatever the season and setting provide, including grain, fruit, invertebrates and carrion. Both ferment plant material in an enlarged caecum and both pass food through a second time, recovering nutrients that microbial digestion released after the first passage.

Behaviour

Beavers work at dusk and through the night, felling trees with their incisors, dragging material into place and maintaining dams and lodges as family units built around a breeding pair with offspring from more than one year. They slap the water with the tail as an alarm. Rats live in colonies with dominance hierarchies, follow scent-marked routes and are notably wary of novelty. One animal builds structures that outlast it; the other exploits structures made by others.

The beaver's equipment reads as a checklist for working underwater: nictitating membranes act as goggles, ears and nostrils close, lip folds seal behind the incisors so it can gnaw while submerged, and the tail both stores fat and sheds heat. The rat's adaptations are for darkness and tight spaces instead, with whiskers, acute smell, ultrasonic hearing, and a skeleton that passes through openings far smaller than the animal appears to require.

The beaver was trapped almost to extinction across much of Europe and North America for fur and castoreum, and has since been reintroduced in many countries, where its dams are now studied for flood attenuation and water storage. The rat travelled in the opposite direction, spreading with human shipping to become both a laboratory mainstay and a serious conservation problem on seabird islands. Both Castor species are currently assessed as widespread following a long recovery from historic trapping, and reintroduction schemes continue across parts of Europe. Is a beaver a giant rat?
No. A beaver belongs to Castoridae, a family of its own with two living species, while rat means the genus Rattus in Muridae. They share the order Rodentia and little else, since the beaver has webbed hind feet, a flat paddle tail and an aquatic body plan the rat entirely lacks. Calling it a giant rat gets the family wrong, not just the scale.
Are rats and beavers related at all?
Yes, but distantly, as members of the same order rather than the same family. Rats sit in the suborder Myomorpha and beavers in Castorimorpha, branches whose common ancestor lies tens of millions of years back. What they inherited from it is the rodent tooth plan: one pair of ever-growing incisors per jaw, a gap behind them, and grinding cheek teeth further back.
Why are the front teeth of both animals orange?
Because the enamel on the front face of a rodent incisor contains iron compounds that harden it and give it that orange or rust colour. The softer dentine behind wears away faster than the enamel in front, so gnawing keeps a chisel edge continuously sharpened. It is a shared rodent feature and it is far more obvious on a beaver simply because the teeth are so much larger.
Which living rodent is larger than a beaver?
The capybara of South America, which is the largest living rodent. The beaver is generally treated as the second largest, with the two Castor species overlapping in size. Do rats build anything like a beaver dam?
No. Rats dig burrow systems with more than one entrance and they gather food into larders, but neither activity alters water flow or creates habitat for other species.
