Otter is a group name for the subfamily Lutrinae, roughly a dozen species inside Mustelidae, the weasel family, within the order Carnivora. Beaver covers two living species in the genus Castor, the North American and Eurasian beavers, placed in their own family Castoridae inside Rodentia. The lineages separated tens of millions of years ago. Everything the two share — dense fur, webbed feet, a streamlined outline, valves that seal the ears and nostrils underwater — is convergence on a semi-aquatic life rather than inheritance from a recent common ancestor.

Telling them apart

Heads differ too: otters show a flattened, heavily whiskered face with eyes and ears set high for swimming, while beavers have a blunt rounded muzzle and, seen close, unmistakable orange-fronted incisors.

Habitat and distribution
Ranges overlap widely across North America, Europe and northern Asia, so meeting both on one river is ordinary. Otters use rivers, lakes, marshes and, in some species, coastal water, and they range far along a waterway rather than settling in a single pool. Beavers are tied to slow fresh water deep enough to hide a lodge entrance, and where the flow is wrong they impound it themselves. A beaver pond frequently becomes good otter habitat, which is part of why the two turn up together.
Diet and ecological role
The diets could hardly be further apart. Otters are carnivores taking fish, crayfish, crabs, amphibians and occasionally birds or small mammals, with the mix shifting by species, region and season. Beavers are strict herbivores feeding on bark and the soft cambium beneath it, plus twigs, buds and aquatic plants, and in colder regions they cache branches underwater for the winter. Feeding sign is equally distinct: fish scales and shell fragments near an otter latrine, versus pale stumps cut to a point.
Behaviour
Beavers are engineers. They fell trees, build dams and lodges, dig canals, and live in family groups where older offspring stay on and help raise the next litter. Otters construct nothing comparable, resting instead in bankside holts and dens and patrolling long stretches of water. Otters are widely described as playful for their rolling, chasing and sliding behaviour, though what looks like play also functions as practice and social bonding. Beavers slap the tail as an alarm; otters more often give a whistle or chirp.
Senses and adaptations
Both seal the nostrils and ears underwater and rely on dense underfur that traps air for insulation rather than on blubber. Otters carry prominent stiff whiskers used to detect the water movement of prey, which matters in murky water and after dark. Beavers have transparent nictitating membranes that work like goggles and lips that close behind the incisors, letting them gnaw submerged wood without swallowing water. Neither animal is a pet; many populations are legally protected and international trade in several species is regulated.
Conservation context
Status varies sharply by species. Several otters, among them the giant otter and the sea otter, have suffered serious declines, while the Eurasian otter has recovered across parts of Europe following pollution controls. Both beaver species are widespread again after historic near-extirpation in places, and the Eurasian beaver has been reintroduced across much of its former range.
