Otter is a group name for the subfamily Lutrinae, roughly a dozen species inside Mustelidae, the weasel family, within the order Carnivora. Beaver covers two living species in the genus Castor, the North American and Eurasian beavers, placed in their own family Castoridae inside Rodentia. The lineages separated tens of millions of years ago. Everything the two share — dense fur, webbed feet, a streamlined outline, valves that seal the ears and nostrils underwater — is convergence on a semi-aquatic life rather than inheritance from a recent common ancestor.

Habitat and distribution

Beavers are tied to slow fresh water deep enough to hide a lodge entrance, and where the flow is wrong they impound it themselves. Both seal the nostrils and ears underwater and rely on dense underfur that traps air for insulation rather than on blubber. Otters carry prominent stiff whiskers used to detect the water movement of prey, which matters in murky water and after dark. Beavers have transparent nictitating membranes that work like goggles and lips that close behind the incisors, letting them gnaw submerged wood without swallowing water. Is an otter a type of beaver?
No. Otters are carnivorans in the weasel family, Mustelidae, and beavers are rodents in Castoridae. They are not close relatives and the resemblance is entirely convergent — dense fur, webbed feet and a streamlined body are what a mammal needs to make a living in cold fresh water, whichever branch of the family tree it came from. Diet, teeth and tail shape all reflect the deeper split.
Which one builds the dam, the otter or the beaver?
Only beavers build dams. They also build lodges, dig canals and fell trees, which is why a beaver-occupied stream looks physically rebuilt. Otters build nothing structural; they shelter in existing bank cavities, root systems and holts, and their sign is limited to worn slides, haul-out spots and conspicuously placed scat. If you are looking at a dam or a stick lodge, beavers made it, even if an otter is swimming past.
Why does a beaver have orange front teeth?
The outer enamel of a beaver's incisors contains iron compounds that both harden the cutting face and give it the orange colour. Because the softer dentine behind wears faster, the tooth self-sharpens to a chisel edge, and the incisors keep growing throughout life to replace what gnawing removes. Otters have no equivalent — their teeth are built for gripping and shearing prey, not for cutting wood, and they are plain white.
Can otters and beavers live on the same river?
Yes, and it is common across the northern hemisphere where their ranges overlap. They are not competitors, because one eats fish and invertebrates and the other eats bark and water plants. Beaver ponds slow the current, deepen the channel and support more fish and amphibians, so beaver engineering often improves conditions for otters. Seeing both in one stretch of water is one reason the two get mixed up in the first place.
What else gets mistaken for an otter or a beaver?
Muskrats and coypu are the usual culprits. A muskrat is much smaller than a beaver and its tail is narrow and flattened side to side rather than top to bottom. Coypu, also called nutria, are introduced in several regions and swim with a thin round tail and white muzzle whiskers. Size and tail cross-section usually resolve all four, but a distant head-only view of any of them is genuinely ambiguous.
