Sea Lion vs Seal: Key Differences Explained
The short answer
Look for ears and front flippers. A sea lion has small visible ear flaps and long, broad, hairless fore flippers that it rows with, and it can rotate its hind flippers forward to walk on all fours ashore. A true seal has only an ear hole, short furred and clawed fore flippers, and hind flippers that cannot rotate, so it humps along the ground. Sea lions swim with the front flippers, while true seals scull with the back.

How they are related
Pinnipeds fall into three living families. Otariidae, the eared seals, contains sea lions and fur seals. Phocidae, the true or earless seals, contains harbour, grey, harp, ringed, leopard, Weddell, monk and elephant seals among others. Odobenidae contains only the walrus. Seal in everyday use usually means a phocid, but the word is also buried inside fur seal, which is an otariid, so the name itself is part of the problem this page exists to solve.

Telling them apart
Three checks in order. Ears: a small furred flap behind the eye means an eared seal. Fore flippers: long, bare and paddle-like on a sea lion, short, furred and clawed on a true seal. Movement on land: a sea lion props itself up and walks with the hind flippers tucked under the body, while a true seal cannot do this and shuffles forward in a caterpillar motion. Any one of the three usually settles it.

Habitat and distribution
Both families are widespread but skewed differently. Sea lions occupy temperate and subpolar coasts of the Pacific, the southern Atlantic and Australasia, hauling out on rocks, beaches, breakwaters and docks. True seals reach much further into the extremes, including Arctic and Antarctic pack ice and, at the other end, the warm waters used by Hawaiian and Mediterranean monk seals. Where both occur, the animal on the man-made structure is usually the sea lion.
Diet and ecological role
Both are carnivores taking fish and cephalopods hunted in the water column rather than off the bottom. Sea lions pursue schooling fish and squid, sometimes cooperatively, diving to moderate depths on short cycles. True seals range much wider, from fish specialists to the crabeater seal, whose lobed teeth strain krill, and the leopard seal, which takes krill, fish, penguins and young seals. Neither family works the seabed for bivalves the way the walrus does.
Behaviour
Sea lion rookeries are loud, crowded and structured, with large males holding territory and mating with many females, and the barking almost constant. True seals vary far more: solitary animals on ice, loose sandbar haul-outs, and elephant seal beaches where enormous males hold harems. Both haul out to rest, to moult and to give birth, and both go through an annual moult that can keep animals ashore or on ice for weeks at a time.
Senses and adaptations
Both families dive on a single breath and share the pinniped toolkit: high blood volume, oxygen stored in muscle myoglobin, a slowed heart rate on submersion and blood shunted towards essential organs. Vision is adapted to low light, helped by a reflective layer behind the retina. Whiskers are highly sensitive in both and detect the hydrodynamic trails left by swimming fish. Otariid fur seals add a dense underfur that traps air, while phocids lean more on blubber.

Lifespan and life stages
Figures differ by species more than by family, so a single number for either group would mislead. Many sea lions live into their late teens and twenties, with males typically shorter-lived than females because of the physical cost of holding a breeding territory. True seal lifespans span a similar range, and some species are documented into their thirties. Wild survival depends on prey availability, entanglement, disease outbreaks and regional conditions in any given decade.
