Sea Lion vs Walrus: Key Differences Explained
The short answer
These are two of the three living pinniped families. The sea lion is an otariid, an eared seal with small external ear flaps, long fore flippers and a dense coat, hunting fish and squid in open water. How they are related

Telling them apart
There is no realistic chance of mixing an adult walrus with a sea lion once tusks are visible, but the supporting traits still matter. A sea lion has visible ear flaps, a dog-like muzzle with finer whiskers, and a furred, comparatively sleek body. Tuskless juvenile walruses are the only real ambiguity.

Habitat and distribution
The walrus is an Arctic and subarctic animal, tied to shallow continental shelf where the seabed lies within diving range and to sea ice or coastal haul-outs for resting. Sea lions occupy temperate to subpolar coasts across the Pacific, the southern Atlantic, South America and Australasia, and no sea lion species is an Arctic ice animal. The ranges do not meaningfully overlap, so geography separates them before any anatomical feature is examined.
Diet and ecological role
Feeding is the deepest split. A walrus works the seabed, ploughing sediment with its muzzle, locating bivalves with the whisker pad and drawing the soft parts free with powerful suction generated by a piston-like tongue, and a single foraging bout can process a very large number of clams. Sea lions chase fish and squid through the water column, near the surface or at moderate depth, relying on speed and manoeuvrability rather than touch.
Behaviour
Walruses are intensely gregarious, hauling out in dense heaps on ice or beaches, often in the hundreds or thousands, with bodies pressed into contact. Males produce bell-like underwater sounds and clicks during the breeding season. Sea lions also breed colonially, with territorial males and near-constant barking, but they do not pile into body contact the same way and they move far more freely on land. Both settle male competition largely through display and posture.
Senses and adaptations
The walrus vibrissal pad is one of the most sensitive touch organs known in any mammal, letting the animal locate buried bivalves in dark, turbid sediment where vision is useless. Sea lion whiskers work differently, detecting the hydrodynamic wake a swimming fish leaves behind. Both share the diving package of elevated blood volume, myoglobin-rich muscle and a slowed heart rate on submersion; the walrus dives shallow but long over the shelf while sea lions make faster repeated dives.
