How they are related
Phocidae and Odobenidae are two of the three living pinniped families, the third being Otariidae, the eared seals. Phocids number around nineteen species spread from the Arctic to the Antarctic and into subtropical waters. Diet and ecological role
Most true seals hunt in the water column and take fish, squid and crustaceans; the crabeater seal strains krill through elaborately lobed teeth, and the leopard seal takes krill, fish, penguins and young seals. The walrus feeds almost entirely on the bottom, detecting buried bivalves with its whisker pad and drawing the soft parts free with suction produced by a piston-like tongue. The bearded seal is the phocid that comes closest to that benthic habit.
Behaviour
Walruses are among the most physically gregarious of marine mammals, hauling out in dense contact heaps that can number in the thousands, and males produce bell-like underwater sounds when breeding. True seals span the whole social spectrum: solitary ringed seals maintaining breathing holes under ice, loose harbour seal haul-outs on sandbars, and elephant seal beaches where huge males hold harems.
