The short answer

How they are related

Phocidae and Odobenidae are two of the three living pinniped families, the third being Otariidae, the eared seals. Phocids number around nineteen species spread from the Arctic to the Antarctic and into subtropical waters. Odobenidae has a single living species, the walrus, with Atlantic and Pacific subspecies and a sometimes-recognised Laptev population. Fossil odobenids were once far more diverse. Molecular work generally places the walrus nearer the eared seals, despite the shared absence of ear flaps.

Telling them apart

Adults are unmistakable once tusks are visible, and the walrus is far bulkier than almost any phocid. Skin differs sharply too, since a phocid is smoothly furred and a walrus shows sparse bristles over deeply wrinkled, often flushed hide. Tuskless calves are the main ambiguity.

True seals occupy an enormous range by comparison — Arctic and Antarctic pack ice, temperate coasts, estuaries, some lakes such as Baikal, and the subtropical waters used by Hawaiian and Mediterranean monk seals. Ringed, bearded, harp and hooded seals share Arctic waters with walruses, so overlap is real but limited.

Most true seals hunt in the water column and take fish, squid and crustaceans; the crabeater seal strains krill through elaborately lobed teeth, and the leopard seal takes krill, fish, penguins and young seals. The walrus feeds almost entirely on the bottom, detecting buried bivalves with its whisker pad and drawing the soft parts free with suction produced by a piston-like tongue. The bearded seal is the phocid that comes closest to that benthic habit.

Behaviour

Walruses are among the most physically gregarious of marine mammals, hauling out in dense contact heaps that can number in the thousands, and males produce bell-like underwater sounds when breeding. True seals span the whole social spectrum: solitary ringed seals maintaining breathing holes under ice, loose harbour seal haul-outs on sandbars, and elephant seal beaches where huge males hold harems. Both families come ashore or onto ice to rest, moult and give birth.

Senses and adaptations

Both rely heavily on touch, but for different jobs. Phocid whiskers detect the hydrodynamic wake left by a swimming fish, allowing pursuit in darkness or turbid water. The walrus whisker pad is a dense array of several hundred stiff bristles used as a tactile search tool across the seabed. Both share the diving package — high blood volume, myoglobin-rich muscle and a slowed heart rate on submersion — and both have eyes adapted to low light.

Neither group has a single figure worth quoting. Walruses are long-lived, commonly reaching their thirties, with age often estimated from growth layers in the teeth. True seal lifespans run from around fifteen to twenty years in some species to thirty or more in others, and males in strongly competitive breeding systems, such as elephant seals, typically live shorter lives than females. Wild survival depends on ice conditions, prey and disease outbreaks regionally.

Is a walrus a true seal?
