They are two different families of toothed whale. Most dolphins, family Delphinidae, have a distinct beak, sharply conical teeth and a curved dorsal fin, and many are demonstrative at the surface. Porpoises, family Phocoenidae, are smaller and blunt-faced, with flattened spade-shaped teeth and a low triangular fin, and they usually roll quietly rather than leap. A cetacean playing in a boat's bow wave is almost always a dolphin, which is why porpoise sightings feel scarcer than they are.

How they are related

Both families sit within Odontoceti, the toothed whales, alongside sperm whales, beaked whales and river dolphins. Delphinidae is the large and varied family that includes bottlenose dolphins, common dolphins, pilot whales and the orca; Phocoenidae is a compact family of small, stocky species including the harbour porpoise, Dall's porpoise, the finless porpoises and the vaquita. Neither is contained within the other, and porpoise is not a size class of dolphin.

A note on naming: Both names cover families rather than species — roughly 40 dolphins and six to eight porpoises — so any measurement here is a family-level range. Everyday English also applies porpoise far more loosely than the family does.

Telling them apart

Work from the outline. A blunt face with no beak, a low triangular fin and a quiet rolling surfacing points to a porpoise; a defined beak, a hooked fin and energetic surface behaviour points to a dolphin. Size helps as a filter, because porpoises rarely exceed two and a half metres. The tooth difference that defines the families is real but is a specimen character, not something you can check on a swimming animal.

If someone says porpoise about an animal riding the bow wave off a headland, they almost certainly mean a dolphin, because the everyday use of the word covers far more animals than the family does. Habitat and distribution

Dolphins occupy everything from tropical open ocean to temperate shelf seas, with some species entering large rivers and estuaries. Porpoises are more strongly associated with cool temperate and cold coastal waters, shallow shelf seas and tidal channels, with the finless porpoises in warmer Asian coastal waters and the vaquita restricted to a small part of the upper Gulf of California. Ranges overlap widely in temperate coastal seas, which is where the confusion happens.

Diet and ecological role

Both families are predators of fish and squid, located by echolocation and taken whole. Dolphins include species that coordinate as groups to concentrate schooling fish, and the orca alone spans dietary specialisations from fish to marine mammals depending on population. Porpoises tend to feed on smaller schooling fish and bottom-associated species, taking many small meals through the day, which suits their high metabolic demand and small body size.

Behaviour

Dolphins are the more socially conspicuous of the two, with fluid group structure, whistled contact calls and habitual interaction with vessels. Porpoises are typically less demonstrative, occurring singly, in pairs or in small groups, and generally avoiding boats rather than approaching them. That behavioural gap exaggerates the perceived abundance difference: porpoises can be common in an area and still be seen far less often than dolphins passing through it.

Senses and adaptations

Both echolocate, but they do it in different acoustic bands. Porpoises use narrow-band high-frequency clicks concentrated well above 100 kHz, a signal type shared with a few other small cetaceans and thought to sit above the hearing range of some large predators. Dolphins use broadband clicks and add whistles for social communication. Both families have the fatty melon that focuses outgoing sound and jaw fats that carry returning echoes to the ear.

Reported lifespans differ markedly. Harbour porpoises are generally short-lived by cetacean standards, with most published estimates in the region of a decade or so and older animals uncommon. Several dolphins live much longer, with bottlenose dolphins documented into their forties and beyond in well-studied populations, and orcas longer still. Figures depend on population, sex, and the ageing methods used, so ranges rather than single numbers are appropriate.

Both families interact heavily with fisheries, and entanglement in gillnets is a documented and serious pressure on several porpoise populations in particular. Dolphins have a long history in display and research settings, while porpoises have rarely been maintained in captivity. Pressures fall unevenly. The vaquita, a porpoise, is among the most threatened marine mammals known, and several other porpoise populations face intense gillnet bycatch. Dolphin species range from abundant and widespread to locally depleted, with some coastal and riverine populations in serious decline. Is a porpoise just a smaller kind of dolphin?
No. They are two separate families within the toothed whales, so a porpoise is not a subset of dolphins any more than a fox is a subset of wolves. Porpoises do happen to be smaller on average, but the defining differences are anatomical: spade-shaped rather than conical teeth, a blunt face rather than a beak, and a low triangular rather than hooked dorsal fin.
Why do porpoises have spade-shaped teeth when dolphins have cone-shaped ones?
Tooth form follows feeding style. Conical teeth suit gripping and holding slippery prey, and dolphins rely on that grip when seizing individual fish or squid. The flattened, spatulate teeth of porpoises give a broader working edge suited to the smaller prey they take in quantity. Whatever the functional detail, the difference is consistent enough across both families to serve as the formal anatomical diagnostic.
Which of the two is bow-riding in front of my boat?
Almost certainly a dolphin. Riding the pressure wave at a vessel's bow is characteristic delphinid behaviour and is rarely reported for porpoises, which usually move away from boats and surface with a brief low roll. If you can see a beak and a swept-back hooked fin as the animal turns in the wave, that confirms it. Dall's porpoise is the occasional exception people cite.
Do porpoises whistle the way dolphins do?
They are not known to. Porpoises produce narrow-band high-frequency echolocation clicks, typically well above 100 kHz, and lack the frequency-modulated whistles that many dolphins use for social contact and, in bottlenose dolphins, for individually distinctive signature calls. The difference is useful in practice: passive acoustic monitoring can assign detections to family from the click structure alone, without anyone seeing the animal.
Is the vaquita a dolphin or a porpoise?
