If the fin stands well above head height when the animal surfaces beside a boat, that is an adult male orca and nothing else.
Habitat and distribution
Porpoises occupy cool temperate and cold coastal shelf seas, tidal channels and bays, with warmer-water exceptions among the finless porpoises. Orcas are among the most widely distributed mammals in the world, occurring from polar pack ice to the tropics and from deep ocean to shallow coastal waters, with individual populations often far more restricted than the species range implies. The two overlap routinely along temperate coasts.
Diet and ecological role
Porpoises take small fish more or less continuously, a pattern suited to a small body with high heat loss and correspondingly high energy demand. Orca diets are partitioned by population: some specialise on particular fish species, others on marine mammals including small cetaceans, and the differences are stable enough to be treated as ecological types rather than individual preference. This is a rare example of dietary specialisation structuring a single species across ocean basins.
Behaviour
Orcas live in long-lasting social groups organised around females, with group-specific vocal repertoires that persist across generations and are learned rather than inherited genetically. Porpoises are far less social in appearance, generally travelling alone or in small groups, and rarely approaching vessels. Both are constant movers, but an orca group covering a hundred kilometres in a day is doing something categorically different from a porpoise working one tidal channel.
