Wasp is an informal name for most members of the order Hymenoptera that are neither bees nor ants, an assemblage running from microscopic parasitoid wasps to the large social vespids. Hornets are a defined group within it: the genus Vespa in the family Vespidae. Vespa mandarinia is one species in that genus. Yellowjackets, often called hornets in North American usage, belong to the related genera Vespula and Dolichovespula rather than to Vespa.

Identification guides lead with the head. The Asian giant hornet has a broad orange to yellow head that looks wide behind large eyes, with a dark thorax and a banded orange and brown abdomen. Several native North American insects, including cicada killers, European hornets and some horntails, are large enough to be mistaken for it and account for many reports.
If the insect is in Europe, Africa, Australia or the Americas and you are not in the small area of past Pacific Northwest detections, it is almost certainly not this species. Look for a broad orange head much wider than a yellowjacket's, a body length around four centimetres or more, and a nest in the ground rather than hanging under an eave. Social wasps use woodland, farmland, gardens and urban space almost everywhere outside Antarctica, and solitary species exploit an even wider set of niches, from deserts to canopy. The Asian giant hornet is a woodland and low-mountain species across parts of East, South and Southeast Asia, favouring landscapes with soil and root cavities for nesting. The North American detections from 2019 were confined to a small area of the Pacific Northwest and prompted an intensive agency response.
Diet and ecological role
Adult wasps of the social kind mostly drink nectar, sap and other sugars, while the protein they collect goes to the larvae. In the Asian giant hornet, workers hunt large insects, chew them into a paste and carry it back to the brood, and colonies have been documented attacking nests of social bees and other wasps in late season. Parasitoid wasps do something entirely different, developing on or inside a host insect.

Workers live weeks, males die after mating, and only newly mated queens overwinter, typically emerging in spring to found nests. Solitary wasps commonly spend most of the year as larvae or pupae inside a sealed cell and fly as adults for only a few weeks.
