How they are related

Damselflies are the suborder Zygoptera within the order Odonata, while mayflies form the entirely separate order Ephemeroptera. Both are traditionally grouped as palaeopterans, insects that cannot flex their wings at the base to lay them flat back over the abdomen the way a beetle or a fly can, though the validity of that grouping is debated. Damselfly larvae favour vegetated still and slow water as well as streams. Adults of both stay near their emergence sites, and mayfly emergences can be spectacular where a river produces synchronised hatches.

Adult damselflies hunt, taking small flying insects on the wing and gleaning others from vegetation, and their larvae are ambush predators using an extensible hinged labium. Mayfly nymphs mostly graze algae, biofilm and detritus from stones and plants, with a minority of predatory species, and adult mayflies do not feed at all. Their mouthparts are reduced to non-functional remnants, so the whole winged phase runs on reserves accumulated underwater.

Mayfly adults are known for synchronised swarming, with males forming dancing aggregations over water into which females fly, and whole populations sometimes emerging on a single evening. Damselflies do not swarm in that way; males hold small territories along banks and among stems, perch conspicuously and make short flights after prey or rivals. Mayflies also moult once more after their wings already work, resting as a dull-winged subimago before the final change.

Senses and adaptations

Damselflies rely on large compound eyes and precise independent control of four wings to catch prey in flight. Mayflies invest in an entirely different problem: getting airborne, mating and laying eggs before their reserves run out. Males of many species have enlarged upward-facing eyes, in some cases developed into a separate turban-shaped structure, used to spot females against the sky while swarming. Do mayflies really live for only one day?
The winged adult is short-lived — hours in some species, a few days in others — because it cannot feed, its mouthparts having been reduced to non-functional remnants. The insect itself is not brief, though. The nymph develops underwater for months and often more than a year before emerging. A damselfly's adult phase, by contrast, commonly lasts several weeks because the adult hunts and refuels.
