How they are related
The antlion family Myrmeleontidae sits in Neuroptera, the same order as lacewings and owlflies, and contains a large number of species across warm and temperate regions. Damselflies are the suborder Zygoptera in Odonata. Nothing about the resemblance reflects relatedness: it is two lineages arriving at a long abdomen and four narrow membranous wings from different starting points. A note on naming: Antlion refers to the family Myrmeleontidae as a whole and damselfly to the suborder Zygoptera, so both are group names; wing markings, size and larval strategy differ substantially between species.

The habitats are close to opposites, and finding conical pits in dry sand is an antlion record in its own right even without seeing the larva.
Diet and ecological role
An antlion larva takes ants and other small ground-living arthropods that stumble into reach, injecting digestive fluid through its hollow jaws and drawing out the liquefied contents. Adults of many species feed on nectar and pollen, while others hunt small insects. A damselfly nymph takes aquatic invertebrates using its extendable lip, and the adult catches small flies in the air and eats them on a perch, with jaws that chew rather than suck.
Behaviour
The pit trap is the antlion's signature: a larva walks backwards in a spiral to excavate a cone in loose sand, then waits buried at the bottom, flicking sand at prey that slips on the slope. Not every species builds one; many simply lie hidden in the substrate. Damselflies behave nothing like this — males defend short stretches of bank, pairs fly in tandem, and females place eggs into plant tissue at or below the waterline.

An antlion larva has no need of sharp vision: it reads vibrations transmitted through loose grains and responds to prey sliding on the slope above it. Its jaws are grooved tubes rather than chewing blades.
