How they are related
Butterflies are day-flying members of Lepidoptera, conventionally the superfamily Papilionoidea, a subgroup that sits within the much larger radiation usually called moths — which is why moths do not form a tidy group of their own. Damselflies are the suborder Zygoptera in Odonata, an ancient order of predatory insects with aquatic young. The two orders are separated by a very deep split, and they differ in mouthparts, wing structure and life cycle rather than in any single feature.
A note on naming: Butterfly is a common name for the day-flying superfamily Papilionoidea within Lepidoptera and damselfly for the suborder Zygoptera, so both cover thousands of species and this page describes the shared features of each group.
Telling them apart
If the wings are opaque and patterned, it is a butterfly; if light passes through them and a network of veins is visible, it is a damselfly. Follow up with the antennae, clubbed and obvious on a butterfly, bristle-short on a damselfly. Body shape helps as well: a damselfly's abdomen is a long thin rod, often far longer than the thorax, while a butterfly's is short, furry and tucked between the wing bases.

If the insect over the river is dark-winged and flutters like a small butterfly but has a metallic blue or green body and bristle antennae, it is a demoiselle damselfly.
Habitat and distribution
Damselflies are confined to the neighbourhood of fresh water because the nymph lives in it, so the adults gather along pond edges, ditches, canals and river margins. Butterflies range far more widely, using grassland, woodland, moorland, gardens and roadside verges wherever their caterpillar host plants and adult nectar sources occur. Both are common along a flower-rich bank beside a pond, which is where the two are most likely to be seen in the same glance.
Diet and ecological role
Adult damselflies eat other insects, catching midges, small flies and aphids in flight and taking them to a perch to chew. They never feed at flowers. Adult butterflies do the opposite, using the proboscis for liquids only — nectar, tree sap, rotting fruit, and in some species mineral-rich moisture at damp ground. The juveniles diverge just as sharply: damselfly nymphs are hunters, while caterpillars eat plant tissue, often restricted to a narrow set of host plants.
Behaviour
Damselfly mating is unmistakable once seen: the male clasps the female behind the head, the pair flies in tandem, and they form a closed wheel before eggs are laid into plant tissue, sometimes with the female submerging to do it. Butterflies court with flight displays and scent, and many species bask with wings spread to raise body temperature. Some butterflies migrate over long distances, a strategy few damselflies attempt on a comparable scale.
Senses and adaptations
A damselfly's compound eyes cover most of the head and are tuned for detecting small moving targets against the sky, an arrangement that supports aerial hunting. Butterflies invest elsewhere: colour vision that extends into the ultraviolet, letting them see flower and wing patterns invisible to people, and taste receptors on the feet that let a female assess a leaf by standing on it before laying. Neither set of adaptations would serve the other animal well.

Lifespan and life stages
Damselflies spend months to more than a year as a nymph in temperate regions and then fly for roughly two to six weeks, the exact figure depending on species and weather. Butterfly lifespans vary far more between species: many adults live one to a few weeks, while individuals that overwinter as adults, or that migrate, can persist for several months. Captive rearing figures should not be applied to wild populations in either group.
