The short answer
Watch a perched insect. A damselfly closes its wings together along or above the abdomen and has eyes set clearly apart on either side of a wide head. A dragonfly holds its wings out flat like an aircraft and, in most families, has huge eyes that meet across the top of the head. Damselfly bodies are needle-slim and their fore and hind wings match in shape, while dragonflies are stouter and their hindwings broaden at the base. Both are Odonata, so this is a split inside one order rather than between two.
The main difference
A damselfly folds its matched narrow wings along the body and has widely separated eyes; a dragonfly spreads broader-based hindwings flat and usually has eyes touching over the head.
This is the flagship odonate confusion, made worse by the habit of calling every large insect over a pond a dragonfly. Two features visible without a net or a close approach separate them reliably, and each has a well-known exception worth knowing.

How they are related
Both are Odonata. Damselflies form the suborder Zygoptera and dragonflies the suborder Anisoptera, while a third small suborder, Anisozygoptera, holds a handful of species with intermediate features. Each of the two main suborders contains several thousand described species worldwide, so both are group names rather than species names. In everyday English dragonfly is also used loosely for the whole order, which muddles the distinction before anyone has even looked at an insect.

Telling them apart
Three features do almost all the work. First, wing posture at rest: damselflies fold their wings together along the abdomen while dragonflies leave them spread flat. Second, the eyes, widely separated in damselflies and usually touching across the head in dragonflies. Third, build, since a damselfly is needle-thin and a dragonfly noticeably stouter. Wing shape confirms it, because a damselfly's fore and hind wings match while a dragonfly's hindwing is broader at the base.

In flight, fast straight travel or steady hovering points strongly to a dragonfly, while a low fluttering drift among reeds suggests a damselfly instead.
Habitat and distribution
Both develop in fresh water and both occur around ponds, lakes, slow rivers, streams, ditches and marsh, with species partitioning those waters by flow, vegetation and permanence. Damselflies tend to stay close to emergent and marginal vegetation, where they perch and where females lay into plant tissue. Dragonflies range more widely from water, patrolling open surfaces and often hunting well away from the pond they emerged from, sometimes over fields and gardens.
Diet and ecological role
Both suborders are predatory at every active stage. Adults take flying insects caught on the wing, with midges, mosquitoes, mayflies and small flies prominent, though damselflies also glean prey from vegetation in a way dragonflies do far less. The larvae of both are ambush predators armed with an extensible hinged labium that shoots forward to seize prey. Larger dragonfly larvae reach tadpoles and small fish, a size range the slimmer damselfly larvae do not.
Behaviour
Territorial behaviour is widespread in both, with males defending stretches of bank or patches of water surface. Dragonflies typically patrol on the wing over a claimed area, while many damselflies perch prominently and make short sallies from a fixed spot. Both mate in the distinctive odonate wheel position, and both use a wide variety of egg-laying methods, including insertion into plant stems, which is the usual damselfly approach and less general among dragonflies.
Senses and adaptations
Odonate vision is exceptional in both suborders, with compound eyes carrying tens of thousands of facets, very wide visual fields and colour receptors extending beyond the human range in several species. Dragonflies push this further through the eye expansion that brings the two eyes together, plus an upward-facing dorsal region tuned to spotting prey against the sky. Independent control of four wings gives both groups agility, which broader hindwings convert into speed and hovering power.

Lifespan and life stages
Most of an odonate's life is spent underwater as a larva, commonly for several months to a year or two, and considerably longer in some large species in cold waters. Adult life is much shorter, often a matter of weeks, and mortality just after emergence is high in both suborders. Comparing adult lifespans alone is therefore misleading, and the figures differ by species, latitude and water temperature far more than they differ between the two suborders.

People and these animals
Both are watched, photographed and recorded by large volunteer networks, and their close association with water quality and habitat condition makes them useful subjects for wetland monitoring. Neither has a sting, and the folklore attributing one to dragonflies in several European languages reflects superstition rather than behaviour; a large dragonfly held in the hand may attempt to nip, which is one reason they are better watched than picked up. Wetland loss, abstraction and pollution are the main pressures on both.
Conservation context
Both suborders include widespread species and narrowly restricted ones, and a substantial number of odonates are assessed as threatened, largely through drainage, pollution and the loss of clean standing and running water. Range shifts linked to warming have been documented in several species.
